Couple of issues combined.
First the school system is literally using brainwashing techniques in order to teach children and we have been brainwashed that this is normal.

Picture for a moment a brainwashing scene from a movie. What comes to mind? Is the protagonist forced to pay attention? Do they have to watch something over and over again? Maybe they are forced to repeat it.

Now lets take a look at children. Children, love learning. You can't get a kid more excited than to let them learn things. They learn by exploring, they learn by trying, they learn by playing. They learn by doing things together with their parents and they love seeing what their parents are doing.

Now lets take a look what really happens instead. You sit them down, force them to pay attention to being told something. That something is presented as the truth. They must internalize and memorize the truth. And then they are graded on how well they memorized this truth. Thats textbook brainwashing yet very few notice it unless like me the education system unfairly limited you so you have reason to question it, or get told it like in this postt.

Now once the foundation is layed down in the classroom you need to ensure people don't break out of the programming. So you establish authorative sources (You already brainwashed them their entire school life that listening to authority is a good way of getting the truth) and discourage alternative fact finding. You ensure these sources are everywhere and present them as established and mainstream (Which sustains itself).

Now people eagerly consume or are otherwise confronted with their frequent enforcement and talking point updates. There's one issue though, and that's that some people just are naturally immune to it because they are to open minded and think critically, as well as having a motive to question the quality of the source. In my particular case I initially rejected following the news since I didn't have time to fact check it all. So once I got sucked into it I already had non mainstream sources and a fact checking mindset to guard.

Unbrainwashing should be simple though, stop assuming what you were told is true and go and find some alternative sources and their best arguments. Then compare everything to see who has the best arguments.
