If I were making an appointment to SecDef, basically everyone higher than the rank of Colonel would be written-off as a candidate unless they had some very unique insights or skillset (like General Flynn). By the time one becomes a general or admiral, they are too far removed from the force at large (and have been for years), and are little more than politicians in uniform, whether they see themselves that way or not. As such, everything they have to say is through a jaded lens, and often years out of date and out of touch. Lloyd Austin spent his entire career as a Pentagon paper pusher and it shows. A CSM I had (this was in 2017) hadn't been on the line since the towers fell and it was painfully obvious that he was lost in the sauce, and never got any better before he left.

Pete Hegseth has the potential to be a really good SecDef, and the fact he has literally written a book about how to fix the Department of Defense is undoubtedly a major reason he was considered and ultimately picked. This also means that if he doesn't deliver, or that his sole purpose is restructuring rather than long term leadership, he'll be swapped out for someone else. Alongside Mike Waltz as the National Security Advisor, it appears that the priority is going to be nuking the wasteful spending without sacrificing capability, which is something that needed to happen decades ago.
