Can someone explain to me why the death penalty costs the equivalent of 26 years in prison?

I was doing some research on this, the average cost to keep someone in prison is between 48k and 60k annually, but the cost of the death penalty is 1.26 million. How the hell does it cost that much?

They can file for a million appeals so that takes time and money. Also , considering how corrupt US cops, judges, and DAs are and that many of them don't lose two seconds of sleep if they lock up an innocent man I think it is a good idea that someone on death row can challenge the state's death sentence.

Well, if they have the death penalty they usually stay in prison for a very long time before they are executed.
If they would execute the person right away when they are sentenced, it wouldn't cost them zip!!

I think it's that plus the fact that they are permitted appeal after appeal, so they end up staying in prison years, sometimes decades.

In my state they sentenced a killer to death by hanging. They imported the hangman from Africa, because no one knew how to tie the knot in America. How hard can it be? Google it.
