Is rape really common in the United States?

I had met an American woman who is in her 30s and graduated from a top5 college in the US. One year ago. She became like my girlfriend. But later we broke up.

She had lots of bullshit thoughts. She said rape is so common in the US, it always happens, it happens to most woman, therefore it is normal and government does not do anything about it. And she even was raped several times.

Why do you think she said such things?

Yep. Rape is very common in USA. While my statistics is a bit old at this point but 1 in 5 women are raped in their lifetime and 81% of women suffer some kind of sexual assault. Women who are raped once is also often subject to more rapes. If you have 5 women in your family then statistically at least one of them has been raped.

Then islam and shariah laws or old laws are right about women. If it is that high, system is obviuosly so wrong in todays free world.

Well its going to be true for as long as we let it be true. Its a problem that we know how to fix but rarely do we make a real attempt at it.

No it's not. That woman was just parroting the feminist rhetoric that is constantly trying to paint a picture of female oppression in the US. They do it to keep women angry and scared so they will continue supporting a dying movement that has lost its relevance.

According to the FBI, and using 2023 statistics, the most recent available, the rate of rape was 38 per 100,000 people. That means fewer than 1% of women were raped.

I'm hopeful that the election this year will take us in a different direction, away from all the false rhetoric and fear mongering the left has been doing.

The FBI statistics only contain rapes that has been reported to the police. Rape is one of the most under-reported crimes in the world, which includes USA. It is estimated that only about 25% of rape cases is ever reported to the police.

@Syntosi OK, so let's assume you're right and multiply the 38 by 4. That means 152 per 100,000, which is still means only a fraction of 1% of women were raped. Nothing even close to the feminists claims.

The same is true for false rape accusations, but to an even greater extent. The percentage of false rape claims that actually get recognized for what they are is miniscule. Why? Because it's virtually impossible to prove a rape claim was false. Feminists look at how many rape charges don't get prosecuted and claim it's because most rapists get off the hook. The reality is that in many of those cases the charges were dropped because THERE WAS NO RAPE.

The person who brought those facts to my attention is my aunt, who used to be a detective in California. She told me I would be surprised by how many rape claims are false, but law enforcement doesn't have the time or resources to investigate all those false rape claims and prove they were false, so the charges are dropped and that's the end of it. The perpetrators never get prosecuted.

@Asker The responders here who are saying rape is common in the US are just repeating the debunked claims from feminists who cited debunked statistics from very poorly designed studies that grouped things like unwanted touching in the same "rape" category as actual rape. The fact that there are still people today who believe 1 in 5 women are raped in the US is a sad legacy of the indoctrination of Americans by biased feminist rhetoric. It would be horrible if 1 in 5 American women were actually raped. But thankfully that isn't the case. Not even close.

Depends on the state. Where I am, it isn't as common. In Alaska, as a friend said "it isn't if you'll be raped, it's when and if you'll survive"
