Biden pardoned his son. The two crimes Hunter was (correctly) convicted of would not have come to court for anybody else in the same circumstances.

He held the gun illegally for 11 days and never even fired it. He paid his back taxes, with fines and interest. Neither would have gone to court for anyone else.

It's why everyone needs to be accountable when convicted or then we just have abuse of powers from the richest and most powerful people that can make a phone call and get themselves pardoned. Hunter was correctly convicted even if harshly. We have to be equally outraged when things like this happen to people you support and don't support. Basically all avg Joe's see is laws are for us and not for them at all.

It's disappointing, although I doubt it would have happened if Trump had lost.

You'll notice that Biden didn't pardon himself. Nor did he wait until Jan 19 to pardon Hunter.

I think he was hoping Hunter was going to not be charged so harshly and changed his mind when he was. We have a mad man as president elect now so who knows what idiotic things he will do. He says a lot of things as empty threats. Even if Joe has nothing to pardon himself over he prob will pardon himself just to cover himself if Trump's DOJ does get the call to just go after him. My concern is, once again, half the country won't trust him and how could we? He's so embarrassed he lost in 2020, embarrassed he was called out for lying, caught on a phone call asking to "find" votes for him to win and he wants revenge. The problem with Hunter is he was convicted before Trump took office. America needed proof that laws are for all and we proved they aren't for rich people, politicians and their families. Trump will get away with everything and now Hunter.

We need better reform of pardoning. This should not be able to let free actual criminals. We can't make excuses for Biden or Trump or any politician. I want to see genuine, by the book justice for anyone who breaks the law. Whether it be the person I voted for or not it shouldn't matter. We're either for the law or against it.

This next 4 years will really test ourselves and see how good our systems of checks and balances holds up. I only hope some of the GOP, even a small faction, will rise and stand against this lunatic and prevent him from doing harm.

Trump is a mad man but hey if they can convince him to do the right thing kudos. I hope this happens.

I think perhaps he should have waited until after the sentencings, but if he'd decided to pardon him regardless, the honest thing to do was what he did.

It wouldn't be honest either way. The right thing to do is to stand by your word. If he didn't say anything I wouldn't be as upset because all presidents pardon people including their family.

I don't want to hear any politician talk about law and order on the left or right. They're all hypocritical and out for themselves. Until avg Americans get fair raises, universal healthcare, (with the taxes we already pay), break ups of big monopolies, paid parental leave, end corporate donations and super PACs, permanent protection and funding of social security, price gouging ended, the ultra rich pay their fair share of taxes, they can all kiss my ass. They're worthless and self serving. We need a real progressive candidate that can win. If anyone that still thinks being progressive is socialism or communism, grow up and read a book.

First, a lie on a 4473 has sent people to prison. It is natural for the president to pardon his son. I would do the same thing. I am not surprised, shocked or upset. This is family.

I'm guessing that's the form number? How many of them were sent to prison without committing a crime with that gun? It might not be zero, but I'm sure it's pretty close. Multiple prosecutors have said so.

Lying on the form 4473 is perjury which is a crime. When you sign the form 4473 you attest that the information is true and correct to the best of your knowledge…

Yes, we all know that, and that's what Hunter was convicted of. The jury basically had no choice.

Exceeding a speed limit is also a crime, but exceeding one by a couple of miles an hour is almost never prosecuted, unless it leads to an accident, nor is lying on the form 4473, unless the criminal committed other crimes with the firearm.

Lying on a Federal Purchase form 4473 for a firearm purchase is serious and is a stand-alone crime. It is not like speeding. If he answered the question truthfully, he would not have been able to purchase the firearm.

That's not the question, no matter how much you'd like it to be. How often is it prosecuted as "a stand-alone crime"? Multiple prosecutors, including an ex Attorney General have said it almost never happens.

Quite rightly. Hunter paid off his tax bills two years before charges were brought and he committed no crime with the gun he held for 11 whole days a decade ago.

Some of the Jan 6 criminals have been found guilty of seditious conspiracy against the United States of America. Others attacked police officers. Pardoning them says that's perfectly OK to do, even if you've shown no remorse.
