@msc545 the Shah's Persia kept the Soviets from moving into the Middle east, the Soviets saw the Iranian revolution aftermath, as the green light to move into Afghanistan, during their operations in Afghanistan, the taliban was born from the extreme members of the Afghan resistance who were armed by the US against the Soviets, with the shah still in power, and the revolution averted, the Soviets wouldn't have invaded afghanistan, and the Taliban likely wouldn't exist, and Afghanistan would likely be a democratic republic, history would have been changed likely for the better, the Shah was key to regional peace

Iran is just the latest made-up enemy and the US is trying to figure out if it is safe to attack these guys given that there is an outside chance that they actually have a usable nuke.

If they do, no matter how small or non-portable it is, the US will NEVER attack them, since if they used it that might somehow, in some way, cause some US company to LOSE SOME PROFITS and that is the ultimate sin.
