I know it is never about body autonomy in the first place. It is about ending the life of unwanted offsprings.

If artificial wombs become a thing, who’s going to take care of these kids? It’s nice to think about high-tech solutions, but it sidesteps who’s going to be doing all the work afterwards.


Historically, women have shouldered most of this burden, which is a big part of why abortion has become so sought after in the first place. So if we’re going to talk about artificial wombs, we need to get clear on who’s changing diapers and pushing strollers. Are men stepping up finally, or are we just finding brand new ways for women to carry the load alone?

Who knows. Men just like women might want to abandon their kids or give them up for adoption just like they do with the born ones.
So depends on men. Some will take care, some will abandon.

Well if men want to take over responsibility for children, they can manage (or not manage) parenthood as they see fit and women can go do more other things in life we like to do.

Sure but a lot of men only want kids if women are doing most of the taking care of them. And most women today don’t want to do that anymore because they’ve realized there’s more to life. So if men want kids so bad, they can do the more of the work.

I have ethical issues with it since the artificial wombs will cause harm to the babies/improper bonding and regulation from the lack of environental exposure via mum when they’re in the womb. While I doubt this can be resolved if it was resolved my ethical issues with artificial wombs would be gone.

Right but until the artificial wombs prove they aren’t harming the baby it’s not a viable alternative for most women. Many people would rather end a life than cause a life full of suffering because they couldn’t be responsible for it.

By turning their body into a hostile environment… they don’t so much “kill” the baby as they stop their body from keeping it alive.

It does raise an interesting ethical question when the artificial wombs reach a point where someone would believe it was a viable option/alternative to abortion though.

For someone who was anti-choice I would suggest investing money or energy into pregnancy supports, adoption agencies and maybe the companies developing these artificial wombs so that they become viable alternatives.

How would you get the thing out to put it in the artificial womb? Sounds like a pretty invasive procedure. If it's caught early, many would likely opt to take the pill instead and let it flush out naturally and privately.

It being natural and private is a huge part of body autonomy. It's the reason we have a right to privacy, and to choose whether or not to take medical care that we may see as unnatural (such as a blood transfusion, heart transplant, or abortion). You have the right to refuse an abortion because you have body autonomy to say no to any medicine or surgical procedure on your own body. The same way you have a right to do things privately in your own home, and not be constantly monitored such as on security cameras or forced to have your curtains open at all times. You can have a fence around your yard, and even children can be considered being abused if they are refused the right to reasonable privacy for things like showering, changing, and sleeping.
