Meh, while it might or might not be true I think that is irrelevant to this story. The primary motivation for these people to sue is not because they are seeking the people responsible, instead they simply want to find someone they can pin the blame on and take out monetary compensation. Its the same old story about greed and they are going to have to figure out that mess in court.

There are many precedents for this, but you are not wrong about the money. Nobody would sue if there were no money to be made.

Oh, for sure power lines can cause fires. Its just that through reading a bit about the statements in the lawsuit it just feels like they are out for the money and the power company is the most easily pinned with the blame. I might be wrong of course but you have to agree that they appear very transparent about it.

I worked for electricity company which had a charred tree branch stored in a vault. Never saw it myself. Reputedly it was locked up so in testimony to a Royal Commission could deny it's power lines started a bush fire but if they were caught out lying they could discover it.

SCE has done this and been caught many times in the past, so it is more likely than not that they did it again this time and will be caught...
