California’s Democratic Party, in collaboration with Governor Gavin Newsom, has agreed to allocate $50 million to fortify the state’s litigation fund and support local nonprofits and immigration centers. This move comes in anticipation of potential legal challenges and mass deportations under the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump.

Senate Budget Chair Scott Wiener, a Democrat from San Francisco, expressed his party’s readiness to serve as a defense against Trump’s anticipated policies. He emphasized the importance of funding legal aid services, which are well-versed in community needs and are equipped to defend the millions of individuals and families that could be affected by the new administration’s policies

Newsom’s team has stated that the Governor is working with lawmakers to establish a litigation fund to bolster the state’s legal resources in response to the incoming federal administration’s signaled policy proposals that could harm the state. The Governor is proposing a new litigation fund of up to $25 million for the California Department of Justice and state agencies to defend California from unconstitutional federal overreach, challenge illegal federal actions in court, and take administrative actions to reduce potential harm.

Newsom has expressed concerns that the Trump administration may target the state’s positions on issues such as abortion, environmental protections, and federal disaster response funding. Between 2017 and 2021, California reportedly filed over 120 lawsuits challenging Trump’s authority on matters such as health care, gun control, civil rights issues, and immigration.

If I was a liberal I would denounce the fucking guy. I wouldn't want him representing anything I'd claim to be about. I supported that liberal guy that ran against him for governer (I don't remember his name off the top of my head) as well as that black conservative guy. California needs to get rid of that piece of shit, but I don't think they can do it unless he really fucks up even more than he's already been fucking up.

Newsome doesn’t deserve a dime of anyone else’s money. Unfortunately, for those who lost everything. You have to have some sympathy for them. But on the flip side of the coin. Those people who lost everything. Some or most of them supported Newsome in California’s election.
If those people can’t afford to live in California and have home owners insurance. Then they shouldn’t be living where they are.
The sad part. I live 3000 miles away. This fire will probably have an effect on my insurance coverage!

No state is entitled to federal disaster funds, and the fire itself being very much a result of the state's long running policies on fire management represents a good example of why.

That said we have given aid to other states with similarly as irresponsible records, and it would be unfair not to give them some aid. But the program needs to end here.
