Elon Musk, born in 1971, is a South African (and Canadian due to birthright citizenship, his mother being Canadian). Elon spent the first 18 years of his life growing up in South Africa during the time of apartheid when, Blacks, considered inferior, were oppressed by the minority Whites who ran everything.

Elon emigrated to Canada when he was 18 and likely because he and his (wealthy) family knew "the writing was on the wall" regarding apartheid. If you were alive at that time, you knew it was going to end soon. What no one was certain of was what was going to happen to White South Africans once apartheid ended. Being White and remaining in South Africa could have been dangerous which is likely what Musk's family thought. Fortunately, the transition went relatively well, but it could have been a bloodbath.

So, I don't know of Musk's personal or public views of apartheid are/were and no one cared when he was 18. However, having grown-up in privilege (like Trump) where a form of prejudice wasn't just everywhere - it was codified into law - his worldview may include what I will simply call "NAZI-like tendencies".

That said, I don't know the context of his making that gesture but it may have been nothing.

Elon was merely hailing (not heiling) a tram. It is the standard tram hail. Arm outstretched at about 45 degrees so it is not mistaken for warding off flies, and the palm slightly tilted up to reinforce "stop".

Musk clearly had his palm tilted up. In Nzi Germany that would have been taken as STOP Victory, if he had said Seig Heil.

Because we are not girls, men don't wave at each other though I guess liberal guys probably do. If we unexpectedly see a friend in the distance we quite often raise our arm to 45 degrees in recognition of our friend & so that he will see us. Unless you are picking fruit it is unusual position to hold your arm in and it is clearly a gesture of greeting.

As Freud said sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. So it is over the top to take a commonly used gesture as anything other than that.

As for X it is not a swastika and our Indo-European forebears started using it at least 7,000 ago and Indians (being Indo European) used it for quite some time to symbolize well being. The Nazi's did not invent it and in any case copyright has expired.
