At the age people are most likely to join, absolutely not. That was at the end of Vietnam and it was very rare for people to join the military. Out of a graduating class of over 600, I only knew of one guy who joined. I even had an offer to go to West Point, but there was no way in hell I was going to do that.

By the time I was old enough to barely slip under the maximum age limit, I was more the type of person who might have joined, but by then I had a life and the military was not part of it. Plus by then I had so many injuries I probably wouldn't have passed the physical.

I was there and I talked with the recruiters and whatnot, but in the end they didn't really have many interesting things to offer. The German army was mainly a peacekeeping force back then.

I had been interested to be a combat pilot, and I have the talents. But the guys who looked at me thought that I'm not made for being an obedient, uncritical murderer.

They were right, as I later found out myself.

I was in Air Force ROTC and planned on being a pilot. I could not pass the eye test and was dropped from the program,

When I was younger yeah. In fact had my parents not talked me out of it I probably would have been conned by a recruiter into joining. I was pretty impressionable back then.
