Well, I would reword that slightly.

The powers-that-be clearly censor, alter and defame. There's no disputing that. I would say it is to sure up their narrative, therefore propagate their own worldview and power.

Everything is based on narratives. We've had a very left wing narrative in the UK for so long. Now their worldview is falling down, and with great desperation you see them employing all these tactics. One of the most transparent is when they try and debase a person with a label. A label is easy, because is requires no effort on the person discriminating this person on the basis of this one word or label. So anyone who is concerned with immigration is 'far-right'. Anyone who is concerned with highly dubious vaccines is called an 'anti-vaxxer'. People have a fear of this moniker being applied to them, so pipe down.

I think the mandela effect is real not a conspiracy theory. The flintstones could be misheard as Flinstones and it isn't surprising some will be convinced the later is correct ( with some thinking Flintstones is a gov't plot and falsification of records).

Conspiracy theorist is more apophenia than mandela effect. In a light form conspiracy stems from believing something because YOU thought of it. We are more convinced by something we thought of than what someone tells us is the case.

If I want to convince you of something, I am better off setting you up to have the thought because you will be far more certain of it. Apophenia is a grand version of that effect.

It does take a special type of person to develop conspiracy theories because they are elaborate usually.

I think it explains the start of one pathway. It's very dangerous to have a group of foolish/uninformed people believing false things for the sake of convenience for their view of reality.

Don't you remember Mandela's famous jailhouse speech? He warned us to be mindful to never get swept away in flights of fancy, so strongly wanting to believe that our perceived persecution was real that we forget the truth.
