Tariffs are levied on products that cross borders. Whatever company imports or exports a product across a border it has to pay the defined tariff to customs. So for example, if Canada wanted to transport oil from their oil fields in Western Canada to US refineries on the Gulf of America, the oil company importing the crude would have to pay a tariff and then when the refined oil returned to Canada as gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, etc. they would again have to pay a tariff to get their own oil back across the border or to get any oil of any sort to eastern Canada. Being that 80% of Canadian refined petroleum is carried out in the USA, Canada would have to pay a shit ton more to just exist anymore. If they didn't fork over the cash, they would go back to the stone age. This is why Canada did the math and realized you can't hurt America in a tariff war, America wins by default. It's suicide to dance with the devil in the pale moon light. So they tucked their tiny dicks between their legs and poured a little maple syrup in their hair as they committed to spending $1.3 billion to assist America in fighting the war against fentanyl on the American/Canadian border.
yup. tarrifs make stuff more expensive. cause who pays the tariffs is the customer buying goods in the stores. the idea is to encourage domestic production and long term improve economy and independence. which may or may not work but what is 100% for sure is that it will suck in the short term.
if there's high enough demand and the competitor prices are so high that American manufacturers can undercut them, then yes. economics 101.
of course if there's not enough demand or the prices aren't getting high enough as a consequence of tariffs, then it's a huge shot in your own knee as a society.
From what I have read the importer usually pays the tariff.
Awkward for him. 💅🏼

The exporting country has to pay a duty or tax for the importing country. They can choose to try and pass it on to the consumer but most likely they will absorb the tax to stay competitive with American companies.
If is is a product that cannot be bought from an American manufacturer the customer probably will need up paying more. More likely they will not. For example, the tarriff of Chinese steel and aluminum did not result in higher steel prices.
I've been expiring from Canada to the US for over 25 years. I've never once paid a tariff or tax. We have to collect a tax id of the business we're selling to and nothing crossed the border without that. Then our clients get an invoice for all taxes and duties. We've had clients get a bill years after we've shipped because the import laws changed and they made the tariffs retroactive.
Trump doesn't know how they work. Which is why Trump has had to back down to Canada, Mexico, Panama and Columbia.
Yes the way tariffs work is that Trump imposes them on a country and that country immediately imposes them on the US and then we get a back and forth which raises the prices in both countries. Nothing was accomplished by doing this except to make a lot of people very angry.
Yes. Tariffs put pressure on other countries to come to the negotiating table. They seem to work quite well.
How? Is that a serious question? Because other countries want to avoid it, so they come to the table.
I mean after all you’ve witnessed you’re still stuck on stupid? Canada, Mexico, Panama, and Colombia have all given Trump what he wanted. This is what winning looks like. I know it’s a foreign concept to you.
Do you honestly think that Trump won because here in Canada he looks like he folded like a cheap suit. We aren't doing any of what he said we are doing. We do not care what leaves our country. Canada and Mexico stood up to him and he had to backtrack. There is no deal. He caved because Canada supplies most of the hearing oil, electricity and natural gas to NE US and only a complete moron would put tariffs on that during the coldest months of the year. I am willing to bet he reaches a "deal" with China too and if you believe that you don't understand the Chinese.
@BonzoInBitburg you aren't too bright if you think Trump folded
The deal with Mexico looks almost exactly the same as the one they agreed to in 2019 when Trump threatened tariffs. You should expect the same results. Canada didn't care about tariffs on our exports since it's almost all energy, lumber and American cars. He folded on tariffs right after Susan Collins called him and told him to knock it off. This is what happens when you allow children to sit at the adults table
@BonzoInBitburg Then the tariffs come back. Mexico and Canada need us more than we need them.
Good. 28% of construction lumber in the US is Canadian and American mills are at max capacity. All natural gas in the NE is Canadian. Almost all electricity, oil and gas in the NE is Canadian. There's no possible way Northern governors will allow these Trump tariffs to go through. Wages in the US are too high to compete in the global marketplace and the tariffs are a way to collapse the economy and return to a manufacturing economy from a consumer economy. Canada and Mexico are betting that the American public doesn't have the stomach for that and that's why they didn't back down
@BonzoInBitburg lol. They literally both backed down.
Canada announced this morning that if Trump wants to slap tariffs on us in 30 they will retaliate dollar for dollar starting with products from Republican states. It seems Canada is taunting Donnie
@BonzoInBitburg Justine will lose that battle.
He went from adding 160B of revenue through tariffs to agreeing to Canada flying some drones and a helicopter over the border. But if you think that's a win then I'll gladly take the loss
@BonzoInBitburg lol. Oh so now you’re pro tariff? It helps if you lunatics keep your story straight.
if you're dumb enough to think that trump did it then you deserve the world you live in.
Yep, they raise prices on goods coming into a country. And raise prices on goods.
They will work.
I sense you trying really hard. 😂
you're confused. I'm asking WHAT was "pulled off". Just an idiot trade war and 48% of American liquor sales evaporating.
