The Democrats didn't start the KKK. Southerners - former Confederates - started the KKK. They likely happened to vote Democratic because the Democratic Party was not the Republican Party - the party of Lincoln and the party of the Yankees who won the Civil War and the party forcing highly disliked Reconstruction policies on them. Many southern politicians of the time were Democrats because that's the party they would choose to get into government to oppose Reconstruction.

Furthermore, to help your personal edification, at that time, the Republicans would be considered the liberal party and the Democrats would be considered the conservative party. This essentially flipped between the 1940s and the 1960s during the civil rights era. This is why the "Dixiecrats" were created in the late 1940s; the Dems were moving left regarding civil rights, but the southern Dems still wanted their Jim Crow lifestyle. Civil rights legislation in the 1960s cemented the Democrats becoming the party of civil rights. The GOP, without that to run on anymore, then became evil beginning with "The Southern Strategy" of 1968. This is why the south are pretty much red states now.

The dates you provided was during a time period when the Great Migration and Southern Diaspora were taking place. The reason the colors changed was because of migration. Racism moved over to the north and west. Nothing just magically "flips".

But what I wrote earlier still stands.
When you get older, you will understand. In a sense, you are beginning to already because you should remember a world without substantial social media - like before the Obama Administration - and before streaming became ubiquitous.
In 30 years, when your kids can't fathom life without social media or streaming (and, who knows, maybe those will be gone too by then), then you will understand how culture can significantly change within a generation or two.

Not as much arrogant as ignorant. While it is true that the Democrats started the Ku Klux Klan, that is not an objective description of the people contained within the group called Democrats. The people can change while the name stays the same. The people who started Ku Klux Klan were the racist assholes in the south, who now happens to be Republicans.

To put it bluntly, there was a flip in the memberships of the parties due to political reasons which basically means that the Democrats before that time went over to the Republican party and the Republicans went over to the Democrats. In essence, their political identities switched places which makes it fairly accurate to say that it was the Republicans that started Ku Klux Klan since they are the spiritual decedents of those who did.

Looks like another person who needs a history lesson. Look at an electoral map before civil rights and one after. Use some common sense. What is more likely, the parties switched or 100% of American suddenly did a 180 in their political beliefs all at exactly the same time? Conservative people are Republicans now but they would have been Democrats back then. Trying to compare the parties now to 60+ years ago is total nonsense when they totally changed what they stand for. Conservative minded people started the KKK, not liberal ones. Look into the Great Migration of 1910-1970. This is real history. The Democratic south migrated to the north and west, and therefore racism dominated the north and west. The Great Migration, the Southern Diaspora, these all took place from the early to late 1900s.
