"Trump Officials Attack a German Consensus on Nazis and Speech" NYT

VP JD Vance & Elon Musk have challenged decades-long approaches to political extremism that were designed to prevent another Hitler.

80 years after American soldiers liberated Dachau, top German officials this weekend accused Mr. Vance — and by extension, President Trump — of boosting a political party that many Germans consider to be dangerously descended from Nazism.

The Alternative for Germany, or AfD, is sitting second in the polls for next Sunday’s parliamentary elections, with about 20 percent of the public saying they support it. But no other German party is willing to govern with it. That’s because the AfD has at times downplayed Hitler’s atrocities. Some party members have reveled in Nazi slogans.

German intelligence agencies have classified parts of the AfD as extremist. Members have been arrested in connection with multiple plots to overthrow the government. Some reportedly attended last year a gathering that included discussions of deporting not only asylum seekers, but German citizens who immigrated to the country.

“A commitment to ‘never again’ is not reconcilable with support for the AfD,” Chancellor Olaf Scholz said as part of a lengthy rebuke of Mr. Vance.

Decades of German law and political practice have revolved around the belief that to prevent another Hitler, the government must ban hate speech and shun political parties deemed extreme. The nation has an Office for the Protection of the Constitution, with intelligence tools to monitor extremists, and a constitutional court that in rare cases can ban parties entirely.

Mr. Vance, like Elon Musk, has parachuted into the country’s parliamentary elections, criticizing that approach. Both men say it is time for Germans to stop policing speech & to start treating the country’s hard-right flank as the avatars of disenfranchised voters who share Trump’s opposition to large-scale immigration.

Well atm non of our parties have a chance to form a government. Maybe the CDU if they work together with nazis. Which would be traiterous, but to be expected with their power hungry leaders.

There is an important distintion though. The AFD has around 20%, but thats all their support. While 80% hates them. All the other parties percentage is their support but the opposite percentage number is not their hatred. Only exception to that is maybe the FDP but they get probably less than 5% which is not enough to partake in national politics, as you need at least 5%.

So for excample the greens are at around 14% but that doesn't mean they are hated by 86%, they can easily gather support with the left and SPD if it comes to chancellor support.
Same is true for the CDU (right wing conservativs) they have 30% but are not hated by 70%. While as a right wing party their support is obviously smaller from left wing parties, but if they had a different chancellor candidate they wouldn't be as hated by others as they are now. Even our second to last chancellor Merkel, openly spoke against the current candidate and his moves together with the afd and they are from the same party.

Its not a good party in my personal opinion, but asside from the current supporter of the main candidate they are at least democratic and understand the threat nazis pose.

Note with democratic here I dont mean the U. S. Democrats, and neither do I mean "voted by the majority" which it normally is. In this context I mean democratic in opposition to facism and authoritarian.
You can be voted into office by a majority and not be democratic or do what your voters expect from you. Otherwise you would have to say Hitler is a democrat as well. He was voted by a majority but was far from democratic obviously.

If every party would actually do it, the AFD wouldn't be that big of a threat, but our conservatives don't seem to care about the dangers and only care about power. Contrary to that assumption of the United States, Germany has no uni-party. There are five to ten different parties from very left to very right in the various federal and state elections with guaranteed seats in the parliaments.

Europe has been seriously damaged by the actions of the globalists. Their open borders policy has been more detrimental to European countries than it has to the US. Italy, Sweden and other countries have elected populist or nationalist candidates and by a wide margin.
