Does anyone else worry for Ukraine?

I’m not really all that interested in geopolitics but the recent developments in the Ukraine/Russia war saga has me a bit worried.

for those either uninformed or misinformed on the background of this, here is a brief history lesson on why there is a war there:

When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, Ukraine became an independent nation. Russia initially recognised Ukraines borders including Crimea in return for Ukraine giving up its nuclear weapons under the 1994 Budapest Memorandum. In exchange, Russia (along with the US and UK) promised to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty.

Basically, Russia broke that deal in 2014 when they invaded Crimea. Then in 2022 Russia finally launched a full scale invasion, pretty much because they feared Ukraine becoming too western leaning and joining NATO and they didn’t want such influence encroaching on Russia. This is the excuse Putin used to try and further his efforts to one day restore the USSR.

Now, Donald Trump has in no uncertain terms erroneously stated that the whole war is the fault of Ukraine for “not making a deal 3 years ago”. When in fact they made a deal in the early 90s to give up their nuclear weapons to be left alone. Trump also says that “it wouldn’t have happened if he was president”. Highly questionable. Worst of all, Trump appears to be taking the side of the bad guys: Russia. This should ring alarm bells not only for Ukraine but for the world. If USA is going to support dictators being able to get away with breaking deals which compromise the sovereignty of nations, including full scale invasions, there is a higher possibility that other countries such as China and Iran will grow more bold too.

At first I thought Trump would just be a kind of benign idiot like he was the first time around, but he is turning out to be much more dangerous to world peace.

Its sad how the USA has did a u turn back towards support for its advisories and away from its friends. Trump will surly try to betray Ukraine and reward Russia. The good news for me is Ukraine unlike many in the USA has the strength to stand up for themselves and Trump. Plus Europe seems to be waking up to the reality the USA is no longer an Allies.

Yes and no. I wouldn’t put it past Trump to throw Ukraine under the bus just to make some stupid PR deal with his buddy Putin. But it would only mean more weapons deliveries and support from Europe. And Ukraine is experienced enough to continue to give Russia hell until the last invading orc has been thrown out of the country.

The situation in Ukraine is the most important in the global politic of the planet, WW3 is just by the corner if bad decision are still made. Like peace with Russia.

Exactly. Russia invaded Ukraine unprovoked because of the delusional fantasies of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his false narrative of alternate history he holds in his head.

Ukraine does not deserve this and the world should not stand for it. If they stand for it, we could be opening the flood gates of world war.

It was Ukraine that wrongly tried to eliminate and (according to rumours) eradicate the Russian leaning Donbas people - many of whom wanted Ukraine to remain neutral, out of Europe and NATO. All so it could rig an election to be more "West leaning".

Also, it should have rung a bell to Ukrainians that the USA has always betrayed every country it has "helped". From Columbia, to Iraq, from Afghanistan to Indonesia. Ukraine sold its soul to the devil - and is now realising why it's the most hated country in the world.

No doubt we can look forward to Ukrainian terrorist groups forming, with an axe to grind against the USA. All those "Islamist" groups will have sympathy as they've been through the same pain of the USA fucking up their homelands as well.

You realize that in 1994 the USA signed a support/security treaty with Ukraine, so that they would give up their nuclear weapons and their nuclear bomber fleet? Which is exactly what is falling on Ukraine's feet, 20-30 years later.

That’s actually misinformation which stems from pro Russian sources and commentators. Russian propaganda has been very effective at influencing the right wing of the USA. Unfortunately this seems to include president Trump who left the world agog when recently, he incorrectly stated “Zelensky started the war”.

The actual facts are that there is no credible evidence that US money has simply vanished and in fact, most of the weaponry provided by the US is gps tracked.

Sorry about that but it seems as if you have been beguiled by misinformation spread by pro Russian media sources.
