Ohio governor Mike DeWine nominated Jon Husted to fill the vacancy that was created when J. D. Vance retired to become vice president.
Husted was born in 1967 in Metro Detroit, but was immediately placed for adoption, as his biological parents didn't want him. He was adopted by a family from Ohio. Before he was nominated for Senate, Husted was the Lieutanant Governor of Ohio from 2018 till 2025 and before that served as the Secretary of State of Ohio from 2010 till 2018. He is considered to be closer to the center-right or establishment Republican wing, similar to other prominent Republican senators from Ohio, such as George Voinovich, Rob Portman and Mike DeWine than to the MAGA wing of the party.
Husted has three children and is a Catholic.
