Do you agree with How To Make People Make Babies?

He makes some decent points:

Birth rate related to:
1: Job Stability

(Because people need to believe there is a stability long enough to support a child)

2: Cost of living

(Because people need to be able top afford the basics to support a family)

3: Income inequality

(Because people need to 'think' they can be success and that is hard if they are comparing themself to super rich)

He furthermore suggest that:
A) Work from home helped

(Because it allowed more people more time for children and to live in more affordable places (#2) with a more dynamic job market (#1).)

B) Immigration made the problem worse.

(Because immigrates take scarce urban land houses (#2) and reduce the value of any given work (#1) thus increasing inequality (#3) )

C) Some kind of program reducing income inequality would help.

(Because it reduces visible differences and thus believed ability to meet a lower standard set by said culture. )

My bit:
I don't dispute any of these although I would contend media is largely responsible for problem #3 misinforming nearly everyone about what is a reasonable level of wealth.

Solution A seems viable but so would localism.
Solution B seem seems true, hence the demographic chinses finger trap problem.
Solution B seems like burning down all houses just so some guy doesn't lie to us about how realistic the riches houses are.

Yes. I basically entirely agree. I think your point about media portrayal and societal norms is an important element as well. And possibly more important.

However. We do find that economic stability and heck, affordable housing, is key to people settling and forming families. To that end, combating income inequality, fixing the house market etc are all excellent means of increasing the amount of babies born. None of the points you summarized from the video are incorrect. Their exact weight as a solution can be argued, but the fact that they would help? Pretty much an iron clad fact.

I really only think perceived income inequality is a problem and only because we are taught (by media) that the life style and standards of the well off are 'normal'.
Income inequality and even knowledge of income inequality are not new.

In fact in the past the difference was even more stark for much of history. People simply were not taught by media that the lifestyle of a king was necessary to live.

As we are by TV and movies which constantly portray supposedly 'normal' people living in fancy locations or being well established. This has a lot of people who in any other time would be relative successful trying to live above their their means to better match that just to feel 'successful'.

That said it doesn't negate Issue #1 and #2 which are too historically urban issues.

None of it really matters to me, though, because I never had any interest in having children. It didn't have anything to do with my income, the economy, or anything else. I just didn't want to be tied down.

Most people actually want babies and fail to have as many as they wanted.

Their self-stated reasons are generally inline with what this guy is pointing out.
Boys never get enough resources to qualify in time.
Girls likewise never get stable enough or 'meet' the right guy which basically translates to meet their expected standards before its too late for them.

So the reasons are 1, 2, and 3 for most people with very few actually just want to live for themselfs being perpetually single. Which is basically a way of saying never grow up.

So this represents a huge problem destroying the lives and families of billions of people.

It has civilization consequences too that are really quite dire as well.

The problem isn't wealth its outrageous cultural expectations of the requirements to start a family and out of control prices.

Government run healthcare would do a lot to make that worse given the demographic that needs to start having kids are also the healthiest and thus most burden by the cost.

Poverty isn't the issue but the cost of food and shelter #1 and more importantly wealth expectations #3 we get ultimately from cultural leaders. I think he falsely attributes this to wealth inequality, but that supposes we didn't spend most of the last few thousand years living in abject poverty in 1 room shacks and starvation diets next to rich nobles.

So the issue is probably overwhelmingly our cultural expectations of minimum 'standards' which are far beyond what most people of that age can realistically have.

There is after all nothing preventing us from raising our children in the same homes as our parents as we did for nearly all of history until just the last centery. There is furthermore almost as little reason we can't live on the same low quality diets everyone had until just 200 years ago.
