I say the primary purpose of second amendment rights is self defense against criminals and predators, followed by foreign invasion and, I suppose as a last resort, resistance against a hostile take over of our constitutional government. But nobody wants an all out war with an unknown outcome. Does anyone want to start over creating a new government and constitution?
