Howard Lutnick was confirmed to be next US Secretary of Commerce after Senate voted 51-45 in his favor along partisan lines (two Republican senators and two Democratic senators being absent).
Lutnick has been working at Cantor Fitzgerald financial services since 1983. He became a president and chief executive of Cantor Fitzgerald in 1990 and a chairman in 1996. He invested significantly in technology, establishing an electronic trading platform known as eSpeed. His brother Gary died in the September 11 attacks, together with 658 employees of Cantor Fitzgerald. Since the attacks, Lutnick has invested in philanthropy, most notably victims of 9/11 as well as victims of Hurricane Sandy and 2013 Moore Tornado.
Lutnick used to be a Democrat in the past, in 2016 donating to both Hillary Clinton presidential campaign and Kamala Harris Senate campaign. After that that time he changed his political affiliation to Republican Party - he was a fundraiser for Donald Trump's 2020 and 2024 presidential campaigns, and 2024 Tim Scott Senate campaign in South Carolina. He also served as co-chair of Trump's 2024 presidential transition team and in August 2024, he was named as the co-chair of Donald Trump's presidential transition. He said the reason for his switch to Republican was Democratic Party moving to the left after 2016.
Lutnick describes himself as fiscally right wing and socially left wing. He believes vaccines cause autism (a belief he subscribed to after meeting Robert Kennedy Jr) and considers The Heritage Foundation, which led Project 2025, to be "radioactive". He is also a vocal proponent of Trump's proposal to implement broad tariffs.
Lutnick is Jewish. He is married and has 4 children. In 2021 he was diagnosed with lymphoma combined with COVID-19, but in 2024 described himself as "cancer-free".
