The thing with tarrifs is it’s a game of chicken. It’s a bet that the party that has more to lose will concede first.
But it’s very risky. It’s like to two cars driving head on in an old gangster movie. The “chicken” will turn away first. But sometimes both drivers are so stupid, headstrong and egotistical that it results in a head on collision. Everybody gets hurt.
Trump was right to call out Mexico and China. But Canada was going way overboard. Yes a (tiny bit) of fentanyl and human smuggling is going on at the northern border. But nothing even remotely close to the southern border.
Trump needs to tone down this bs (especially with Canada). It’s very risky for the economy and if the economy goes south not only will Trump’s presidency be in peril but free markets as we know it.

It pretty much is true that the economy is controlled by oligarchy, we're just not calling it that in the media. Big greedy corporations control a lot of things, and I'm happy that some of them are suffering badly in the stock market because of the guy many of these frat boy billionaires voted for.
Again I agree about Canada. But upwards of a 75-100 thousand Americans are dying from fentanyl overdoses every year thanks to Mexican cartels shipping that deadly poison directly through what was Biden’s open wide border.

Anyway Trump knows if the economy crashes his entire presidency is in peril. Anything good he has accomplished (maybe you disagree but I think DOGE is overall a fantastic idea) will be overshadowed.
He’s not going to intentionally destroy our economy. But again I agree he’s gambling with increasingly high stakes when it comes to tariffs. But he’s still only in two months of a his presidency. Things can change one way or another quick.
So I watched a documentary a few years about the cartels smuggling drugs in the U. S., and one of the farmers who raises drugs for the cartel made a very good point when the journalist asked him "How do you feel about giving drugs to Americans and seeing the damage it does?" and the guy said he really didn't feel anything because average Americans can choose NOT to use drugs but they do. He was basically saying the choice is their responsibility whether or not he ships drugs in or not. And that's true. If you never start drugs, you'll never be hooked on them to begin with.
So I think Trump's little 'fentanyl through the border' gig is trying to put all the blame on Mexicans and none on a culture that is already addicted to both pain and pleasure, and self-medication. Back in the 90s when we were growing up, the after school Don't Do Drugs commercials were put in place to help pick up the slack in teaching kids to say no where parents were now caught up in the 9 to 5 Matrix and not spending nearly enough time with their kids. Today in the 2020s, to even do that would be seen as somehow inappropriate for kids to be seeing on TV, even though it's reality and should be done again.

But it gets even more dicey. A lot of overdoses are from people who are unknowingly taking illicit drugs (e. g. street adderal, cocaine, etc.) that is laced with fentanyl. In fact this is how an acquaintance of mine died a few a years ago. Unlike the drugs of the 80s/90s just a small speck of this shit can kill you very easily. Many people get hooked the first time they try it. And ALL of this is being backed by the Chinese Communist Party to weaken, internally divide and eventually overtake the United States.
Anyway there is no black and white simple resolution to this. But no politician is ever going to flat out say that. They run on promises (they often can’t keep). But having fentanyl flowing into the United States like a river sure as hell isn’t helping. We got to do something.
As for the tarriff war. You know I lean right but that doesn’t mean I’m a “Trump worshipper”. He’s making me increasingly nervous with this very aggressive/risky game he’s playing. He’s supposed to the master at the “art of the deal” but nobody comes out on top 100% with major negotiations.
If we go into a recession he will get blamed for it regardless if his policy directly influenced the downturn or not. And again I know there are far leftists just waiting (and hoping for this to happen). Not only to blame him but demonize capitalism in general. And overall I do believe capitalism is a very good thing but I am well aware of its downsides. I myself am getting getting squeezed by a piece of sh*t greedy conglomerate right now at my main job. BUT I am working on my successful side hustle which is also made possible thanks to capitalism.

Canada puts high tariffs on US dairy because our dairy standards are higher. The other tariffs are single digits except for the retaliatory tariffs still in effect from Trump's last term. The US isn't doomed to hell but it is headed towards isolationism because no country trusts what Trump says. He's too wishy washy on trade agreements and can't be believed internationally to keep his word

China produces 55% of all manufactured goods in the world. The point of the tariffs wouldn't be to go all out just to slow them down a bit and spread manufacturing out a bit more. That would be a good way to lower the worlds dependence on China because right now it's a bit crazy. No country in the history of the world has had a trade surplus as big as China.
