Yes, we love to sit on our front porch with handguns, not shotguns and wait for the neighbor kids to kick their ball into our yard. Then the game begins. Will they go for their ball. Are they quick enough? Or will they bite the dust.

Only in SOME states. But it's a bit more complicated than that. If you don't have a "posted" and the keyword here is "posted", "No Trespassing" sign, someone coming onto your property technically hasn't broken any laws.
