I had an import export business for 20 years. Tariffs are a tax paid by importers and the cost is passed on to the consumer. Foreign companies never have and never will pay tariffs. American companies pay Trump's tariffs and pass the extra costs on to Americans

When Trump was in his first term he out a tariff on Chinese steel and aluminum. The Chinese either paid the tariff or they did not sell any steel or aluminum. The reality was that both happened. American steel companies that are still in business could not keep up with demand and when Trump left office inflation was a low 1.4%.

America doesn't manufacture that much anymore so there's no choice but to pay more.

The US can't sell dairy in Canada because our dairy standards are higher but the US sells lots of lumber in Canada. Canada manufactures a large percentage of American millwork and kitchen cabinets made from American hardwood. There aren't a lot of American millwork manufacturers left and a lot of them closed in 2008-2009 so there isn't any workforce capable either

Canada had zero tariffs on US hardwood until this year and the US doesn't have enough softwood lumber for itself so there's nothing to export. The softwood tariffs on US lumber were zero until Trump's first term and he negotiated that deal.

@OneViewpoint Tariffs are not new. President Reagan used tariffs to help American businesses. President Trump imposed tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum. The costs of steel and aluminum products did not go up. Inflation stayed at low 1.4% and the US treasury got billions of dollars.
Just ask yourself this, why would somebody pay more to buy a foreign made product than buy one mad in US that is the same price or cheaper? The exporter has to absorb the tariff if thy want to sell products here.
The "press" is trying to make President Trump look bad. In a week or so when President Trump comes away with another win they will have to bark up another tree.

Products affected by tariffs haven't hit the market yet. CPI numbers were for Feb and that's old inventory. The US trade deficit widened considerably in the last couple months as companies try to beat the tariffs and keep prices low. Inventories are high right now and it's going to take a month or two but I don't expect Trump to actually follow through on tariffs.

Yeah, existing inventories and whatever loading up buyers can do in the short window before tariffs hit will not last long. Most companies have adopted lean strategies and depend on well timed supply chains to keep inventory working capital low. This will hit by summer.
