Is anyone else worried about tariffs? If you aren’t worried then you must be rich

Because things are gonna grow in price and by a lot!! It’s getting hard to afford to live!! How are you supposed to survive? How are you planning on surviving with tariffs?

Yes and no. So far it seems like it is being used to get better trade deals, but where it does not work it could either greatly increase prices or simply make the things unavailable domestically.

There is a lot of hypocrisy in it as well. 35% on Canadian goods but Alberta's oil is almost completely exempt.

NOTE: I hate politics and only follow as to the extent it affects my investments. Stability is better for me, and we have a lot of uncertainty so I am avoiding most speculative allocation.

Worried? I'm not worried for myself -- the price increases on imported produce won't make much difference to me. I'm worried for people who are barely making ends meet. Prices will go up. Tariffs are a regressive tax. The money doesn't come from other countries, it's a tax on US consumers.

I have enough to not care about a few dollars more on the grocery bill, and travel a fair bit, but not enough to fly first class. At the supermarket we just buy what we want and don't worry about it. We don't buy $40/pound crab, but otherwise we don't pay much attention.

What bugs me is that people who are ok with tariffs don't mind paying extra so that "American jobs return" but are adamantly opposed to pay extra taxes for improvements to this country. It's just replacing one way if losing money for another. It's asinine.

Nope. Prices have already gone up by drastic amounts since 2020. It's not fun, but we're all finding ways. Also, I think of the tariffs as coming out of my tax burden which is going down.

Century Aluminum announced plans to restart idled production at its Mount Holly, South Carolina, plant. The company cited the benefits of the tariffs on primary aluminum, which were recently increased to 50% on imports. Century Aluminum plans to invest approximately $50 million and create over 100 jobs to bring the plant to full production by mid-2026.

D'Addario, a global music accessories manufacturer, has been accelerating its onshoring efforts to protect its margins from rising tariff costs. The company has opened new domestic production lines and now makes 95% of its products in the U. S., cutting its reliance on China.

Apple has committed an additional $100 billion to U. S. manufacturing. This follows a threat of a 25% tariff on Apple if it didn't move manufacturing of the iPhone to the U. S. The company's total commitment to U. S. investment now stands at $600 billion over the next four years. A new 100% tariff on computer chips, with an exemption for companies building in the U. S., has also been a factor in these decisions.

Cra-Z-Art, a toy company, announced that it is increasing its U. S. production capacity by 50% to "combat the cost of tariffs for imported goods from China and other countries."

Johnson & Johnson is planning to invest more than $55 billion in new U. S. manufacturing facilities over four years, a 25% increase over the prior four years. This includes the groundbreaking of a new facility in North Carolina.

Also, with all the deportations, construction jobs are going to need to be filled, and restaurant workers, and lots more.

That's why I'm not hiding under my bed about tariffs.

Where is all this supposed tearing-induced inflation? It’s not in the inflation statistics, do where is it?

@slatyb: Your Biden appointee heroine, as a political appointee, serves at the pleasure of the President. Democrats fire Republican political appointees, usually on Day One, when they take over.
Your heroine had to scale back the number of jobs created during the Biden Administration by 1.8 million, including the jobs she falsely reported just prior to the election. Still think she’s qualified? Still trust her? If you do, it’s only because she’s a Democrat, because she sure as hell doesn’t know what she’s doing.
