Tariffs are in effect now. Will they really hurt us?

Question

I've heard some theories that Trump is trying to crash the market on purpose with tariffs, and he hasn't exactly denied that. The idea behind it would be to force the feds to slash interest rates but not sure this can really happen.

Either way, how bad do you guys think these tariffs will hurt? How high do you think the cost of things will go?

Let me see here and flip a few pages back in the History Book. Feels like an episode of Sherman and Mr. Peabody. Let go back in the Time Machine Industrialist and manufacturing concerns in the US decide to Outsource labor to increase the stock dividends. Get that profit margin up. They make a lot of money and the folks that helped them succeed in the first place, get hung out to dry. Not illegal, not immoral. No one has the right to expect gratitude for their labors. You got paid, buzz off. Now your country, which relies on taxes to run, does not have enough in the coffers to repair bridges and highways. Mexicans are able to stay in Mexico because their farms are generating enough revenue to be profitable. Then a member of the same party that OK'd the outsourcing decides to pull out of the agreement that allowed the outsourcing to occur. Mexican farms are no longer profitable so, we start to see more illegals crossings at the border. So the member of the party responsible for the illegal crossings to begin with starts complaining about an action that he caused. Sunny Beach!

So he initiates tariffs to force Americans to purchase American made products, which we are unable to manufacture because skills were lost when the jobs left. It is going to take some time to straighten this out. It is going to hurt but he is at least trying. Give him his four years to try Best Wishes.

Yes it will hurt. First they will have to figure out how to enforce different tariffs for every country it will be a headache for border agents. And then of course the price increases. There could also be shortages. It depends how strictly they'll enforce everything how well prepared they are to deal with the extra work etc. I followed Brexit quite closely and it was very interesting. It'll be similar with this. One thing the U. S. has is they have more space for ports and checking goods so that won't be a problem like in England but otherwise it'll be bad.

Short term, yes. The tariffs will impact US consumers almost immediately. The US middle class and poor get a massive regressive tax increase.

Medium term, yes. Foreign sellers shift away from the US to other buyers. And foreign buyers cut deals with countries who haven't started a trade war with them leaving US sellers with no market.

Long term, yes. The jobs aren't coming back and neither are the foreign markets for US goods.

In the short term, tariffs will cause some pain, like drops in the stock market and increased prices. Note that Trump has paused them for 90 days, and the stock market immediately rebounded. Over the long term, adjusting tariffs will help stabilize things.

Yes, the US will be poorer. In the short term, industries like steel and aluminium have only a few percentage points to flex. They are designed to run 24/7 at roughly full capacity. Building a new blast furnace or aluminium smelter takes 2-5 years. No business is going to do that based on the assumption Trump will not be in power for long. So Americans are just going to pay more for almost everything.

Yes , China will be poorer. But they have internal economic issues to work through. 145% US tariffs are not top of their agenda. It isn't 1945. The USA matters for the global economy, but it doesn't matter as much as it used to matter.

Trump can hurt the Canadian and Mexican economies fairly badly. But to what end? He will feel like he is a big swinging... thing... but it's not going to help Americans one jittery jot.

I live in Canada and we haven't really seen any signs of tariff related price increases. In fact gas prices in Cabada have gone down almost 40 cents where I live.

Tariffs are about paying off debt. There's no such thing as free trade. There is no such thing as free anything. You are going to pay one way or another. The market has been driven by inflation for the past four years caused by our trade deficits and other Government waste. The Inflation was driven by our debt.

When you bring on Tariffs to pay the debt and create a Government agency (DOGE) to tackle Government waste all the inflation in the markets crashes.
