I believe it should be the standard.

Reality is simple. I actually really enjoy treating friends, partners, dates etc. However, I enjoy it because I get to do something nice and to some degree unexpected for them. If it goes from choice to obligation that takes away any positive feelings I get from it. On the flipside, it also makes it pointless as a show of character because being obligated will make even bad people act good.

So for it to be meaningful, the standard should be 50-50 and then covering the other half's costs becomes a nice act.

Beyond that, women in earlier dating years 18-25 or so typically earn more than their male counterparts - until after first child women tend to make more in most western countries.

The historical reasoning for men paying is that it'd often be a working man taking out a not working woman, lets face it more like a highschool girl, on a date. Even then the standard was that she'd still bring money to pay for herself but of course a gentleman would cover it and to some extent doing so was a way to show you appreciated the date.

My point is simply that the historical reason has grown invalid. The material distribution does not support it. We're doing it only out of habit today.

All that said, if we're talking about dating in particular I will always be prepared to pay for it if I am asking someone out to a place I choose which may or may not be a reasonable expenditure for them otherwise.

I use to believe in them. Turns out they just develop into power struggles within the relationship and ultimately leads to unattractive behaviors on both sides.

I really don’t. I’ve always taken care of my wife of 17 years. But if women these days what equality then yes it should be 50/50.
