Tariff taxes are legalized theft for the benefit of already-rich corporations. They have never been anything more than yet another vote-buying scheme that empowers the politically powerful and screws the common consumer, clouded by phony rhetoric about patriotism and nationalism.

President Trump’s demand of “fairness” is as follows: Whatever tariff taxes foreign governments place on American imports, an equivalent tariff tax will be imposed on their imports into the U. S. It’s only fair, he says. This is his justification for higher – much higher – tariff taxes on imports into the U. S.

The end result of this will be an even larger degree of legalized theft as American consumers – and American corporations that use imported parts for their own manufactured products (i. e, American auto companies that import auto parts from Canada) are plundered with higher prices paid for the same (or worse quality) products. Political theft by tariff tax has always been a rob-Peter-to-pay Paul racket. How, then, is it “fair” to American consumers, automakers, and myriad other American businesses to be forced to pay higher prices? Of course it is not; it is quintessentially unfair.

The problem is we haven't had an actual "Laissez-faire" or free market in quite some time. So we're doing our own version of top-down economics like China. Surprise, surprise, it's not the most brilliant idea. Too much top-down control can stifle innovation, reduce individual freedoms, and lead to inefficiencies. America likely heading for a period of stagflation.

I believe in Free Trade, and of course when I was younger Republicans supported it. Now however Neoconservatism the ideology of the Cold War has been replaced by Paleoconservatism of the Pre-WWII era. Back then conservatism meant protectionism, isolationism, and rejection of any programs for the poverty stricken. This is largely the direction Trump is leading us towards. Ultimately however, America will not survive if it fails to work with other countries. Maybe we could in the old days, but not in the era of mass communication.

The purposes of Trump's and others' tariffs are.
*To respond to exclusionary and inequitable tariffs by trading partners.
*Protection of domestic producers and markets from foreign flooding our markets.
*Penalization where foreign nations are acting in a manner harmful to our country.
*A tactical means of reducing domestic taxes by evoking tariffs on imports.

Higher prices at Walmart and Harbor Freight can be a consequence but foreign producers can compensate by pricing policy, reducing their margins.

Tariffs are a form or economic and political medicine.

I definitely don't agree with those tariffs, but I think Trumps main purpose for them is to negotiate a better deal with the countries basically charging America with tariffs.. We just took it for a long time, but Trump is trying to be hard on those countries.. It's why he keeps postponing them a month.. It also encourages more local trade in America.. Buy unfortunately to be that would be deregulate so many laws that prohibit businesses starting..

So if you were in charge of country A, and country B charged your industries tariffs, would you be a good leader if you let country B’s products in your country without tariffs?

Absolutely, I would. In the marketplace or the world's marketplace, I would want our citizens to buy at the best price. I can't help what other governments do. Whenever a government gets involved in the marketplace, the prices are always higher. Therefore, if they charge tariffs, their citizen have to pay more. Just because they punish their citizens with higher prices does not justify me punishing our citizens.

The USA DOES NOT HAVE enough wood to supply its own building demands, even if you were cut down EVERY National Forest, which would be a disaster. Canada on the other hand, has old growth, exploitable forests with dozens of different types of trees. We import roughly $10 BILLION annually. Cut that supply off, where is your wood going to come from at a better price?
