Hmmmm... Americans. Well most Americans can't point out the Pacific Ocean on a map. They think New Mexico is a foreign country, not a state. In short they are completely ignorant of the geopolitical landscape they live in and have zero awareness of the trading relationships our economy depends on or even basic economics.

It's why so many Americans can be lied to with ridiculous propaganda and never question a word of it, no matter how stupid it is. But we still allow them to vote. And they vote to castrate themselves over and over again.

But yeah, maybe 10% of Americans understand that Canada and Mexico are not the enemy but friendly neighbors who we depend on like they depend on us.

I think this is one instance where our relative physical isolation from the rest of the world and our economic success has hurt our national psyche and awareness. People here can get away with being ignorant.

I'm not so certain about the 10% number but I'm constantly amazed by the adults I meet who don't know even simple facts and don't understand how fundamental things in their life work.

Asimov wrote that essay in 1980 after witnessing the fractures in our country during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's and Vietnam war protests of the 60's and 70's. Funny how nearly half a century later we haven't made any progress at all. He's right, this anti-intellectualism element of American culture has been here since before the founding of the country. It rears its head every 30-50 years in cycle that seems never ending. Like a forest fire constantly finding new life from the wind.

The average Americans? Probably not. But the government sure does... why do you think they want to annex Canada? They want Canada's natural resources. Typical bully... instead of trading fairly for them the USA gov would rather just take em. Good luck with that.
