Should dissection of lab raised animals be banned from Schools/Colleges?

This debate has been going on for years.

There are now alternatives to dissection to learn on such as realistic animal models and virtual software on computers where no real animal is killed to learn on. It has been proven that these methods are just as good to learn on as dissecting real animals.
Animals you dissect such as frogs, pigs, rats, rabbits, cats, and dogs are laboratory raised just to be killed, and not in humane ways either. This also goes for Vet/Medical schools/colleges.
There have been suggestions that if an animal like a dog or cat was to be used, it was only because that animal was donated because it had already previously died or was euthanized for illness or severe injury at a shelter/vet and its body was donated for research. Some people still don’t find this acceptable thinking it creates a demand in euthanizing shelter animals.
Another idea is that human bodies from a morgue are voluntarily donated for research at medical schools, because the human body is what we operate on its most accurate. Again, we can do this but still have other alternatives like realistic models and software learn from.

we have a lot of laws protecting household pets so why are these animals any different now if you wanna use that animal for food after by donateing it or selling it to a trustworthy place that can make sure to use it for a good cause sure why not but killing an animal for the soul purpose of looking at its insides is cruel. with that i will leave you with this what if your doctor came in and said you have surgery on Monday we are gonna explore the inside of your chest for fun oh and 13 kids are gonna watch dont worry though it won't hurt much. inner voice:(the only reason it dosent hurt is cause you haven't woken up yet)

Do you want medical staff who have never performed their job duties before doing procedures on you?

There's an issue with EMS classes now where they aren't even training EMTs on how to do IVs. I don't want someone like that trying to operate in an emergency situation. I've had to be the first stick for many to train them and many get super nervous, sweaty and shake while trying to get a catheter needle in the right place. They also freak the hell out when they see blood. In the military, we looked like heroine addicts by the end of training as we were getting stuck around 10 times a day while doing rapid trauma assessments. We also train on cadavers, people who donated their bodies to science so that we can see and learn anatomy hands on.

I’m fine with human cadavers being used, just not animals because they are raised to be killed which is unnecessary and unethical

Good grief, way to avoid the actual question. You think there's enough cadavers to train all medical personnel? What about veterinarians and their techs? We paramedics have to practice doing procedures on animals as well because we also do medical treatments on animals, not just people. Guess you're trying to mouth off about things you clearly don't understand the purpose of to feel good about yourself. Our ethics include being proficient at our skills for the sake of our patients.

If the body was donated for science, use it for science. Medical students learn a lot from books and virtual programs, but they learn way more by handling real human bodies, and it’s easiest when said body has been preserved for that exact purpose of dissection. The same applies to biology students in high school. I would only suggest the virtual programs if there was a lack of donations/budget or if the students were squeamish and/or it went against their personal beliefs.

Yes. It's actually very difficult to get a license to experiment on animals, you have to use the lowest form, the research has to be justified etc. So raising them just so kids can dissect them is ridiculous.

We euthanize thousands of pets each day, slaughterhouses process thousands of animals, thousands of roadkills are picked up. There's no shortage of carcasses, we don't need to breed for schools.

People are so soft these days it doesn't matter... when hard times hit and the food distribution networks don't work and you find out you have to catch a wild animal and turn it into a meal you will suddenly have a choice... being "cruel" to an animal or starving to death. Think of it as an IQ test.

I don't see a need for it. In fact, I am happy that in my 10th grade biology class in 1978-1979, we didn't dissect a frog but, instead, a flower.

Lucky, I was forced to dissect or fail Biology if I didn’t. Coincidentally, in 12th grade we had to write a thesis paper and I chose to write on why dissection should be banned and got an A on that.

High schools banned animal dissections in our area several years ago. Plastic models and computer simulations are now used.

Opinion: Gross, luckily never had to do this in school…. Imagine l students didn’t have a sink they could use in the lab so they had to use them in the public student toilets 🤢🤮
