How easy was driving for you when you first started in terms of going the right speed, spatial awareness, remembering to put your blinker on, etc?

My dad gave me lessons regularly when I was 14 or 15. He would take me to empty parking lots and let me drive to become familiar with the accelerator, brake and controls. I had good spacial awareness.

I took driver's education my first semester in high school at nailed it. I could parallel park when few of the other students could.

I got my learner's permit at 15 1/2 and got my driver's license as soon as I turned 16. I nailed the driver's license test. I knew the laws and safety procedures, how to signal and look before changing lanes, and stuff like that.

Once I had my license, I drove a bit crazy at times when it was safe. I guess I was testing my limits. I knew how to control a skid. I never had any accidents.

It's 10x easier then riding a bike. The problem is fuck ups aren't just road rashes.

Once I was driving daily I felt comfortable. Big mistake I got too comfortable with a spooky on ramp at midnight going home from work. Now I refuse to use it now because I can't respect it for what it deserves so early on learning to drive.

So early on just drive everywhere you can even at peak times. No hurry just drive safely. Seeing as many different junctions at different times is what makes a good driver into a god tier driver.

Spatial awareness was a bit of an issue. I’d get into a turn lane too late not realizing someone from behind was already in it in my blind spot, underestimating the size of my car, etc.

My driving was horrible in the very beginning. Couldn't parallel park for shit. Still can barely parallel park for shit lol

I never had a problem with it and have been told (and trusted) by a number of people that I'm a really good driver. Many's the time I've driven my band home from gigs in Erie (a 3 hour drive) and Youngstown (a 90:00 drive) because I don't drink or do drugs and they were all too high, drunk and tired to drive. My only problem, so far, is not paying much attention to the mirrors because they distract me and I can't listen to music when I drive because, being a drummer, I start taping the gas pedal like it's one of my bass drum pedals and the next thing I know, I'm 30 mph over the limit!!
Some day, I'll have to try getting my license.

My memory is that it seemed pretty easy. I started driving in my neighborhood when I was 14 (my dad was pretty lenient) and it was easier than I thought it would be. I got in my first accident at 15. It wasn't my fault... it was Superbowl Sunday and this guy in his 30s had run to the store at halftime to get more beer. I was driving down a residential street and this guy made a quick u-turn in front of me and hit my front driver's side quarter. I think he'd been drinking a bit and he was more than happy to not call the cops and to cover the cost of repairs, which he did, no questions. That's the only accident I've ever been in.

The problem with using a turn signal nowadays is that it invites people to charge and lunge at you and try to push you away from turning. So I only use my turn signal when I am crossing traffic. Drivers nowadays think only about themselves not about driving in concert with traffic.

It took me awhile. I had some minor accidents and a few tickets before I actually learned how to drive properly. I think it was mostly a problem of being distracted very easily and not paying attention to my surroundings as I do now. I've not had a ticket or an accident in 15 years so I'm grateful for that.

I had excellent teachers, professional driving school and my older cousin. They taught me well.

It's not hard. Had a student who took 4 tries on road test and totalled 2 cars by graduation. It's nice to be rich...
