It's complicated because it really is complicated. It's complicated because most people probably don't know much about it. It's further complicated because there is so much misinformation coming from both sides.

First of all, there is no such thing as an illegal immigrant. An immigrant, by definition, is legal. An immigrant is basically the same thing as a green card holder.

There are a LOT of types of temporary visitation - mostly visas, or passports for visa waiver countries. There are also a LOT of types of Green Cards. No, they are not all the same. There are a bunch of different ones.

People also think that Green Cards are permanent, but they are not. Thank the US government for that misunderstanding, because they call them permanent residents when they are not.

Then there is all the misunderstanding about who the legal immigrants are. People seem to think that most immigrants are from Mexico. As a rough rule of thumb, only about 15% are Mexican. Another 15% are from the rest of Central and South America. About 45% are Asians. The remaining 25% are from the rest of the world.

Now about illegal aliens. No, most illegals are NOT criminals. If they illegally cross the border, they are criminals. If they overstay their visa or other temporary stay, it is not criminal. That's a civil offense not a criminal offense. That second group is the majority of illegals. In other words, the majority who are here illegally are not criminals. They can (and should) still be deported, but they are not criminals.

Another thing that is misunderstood is that a visa, or passport (Visa waiver program), does not grant entry into the US. It makes it extremely likely to enter, but the immigration officials at the border or terminal make the decision about entry. It is not automatic even with the proper visa. As far as I know other countries do the same thing.

The democrats need a new voter base of else they will never win another presidential election. They know what they are doing. They purposely went to South America and publicly announced that anyone that crossed the border will not be turned away. Then they hired a DHS secretary whose whole purpose was to get on TV in front of the American public and just lie about how secure the border was, meanwhile millions of uneducated, indigent people streamed into the country creating chaos resulting in the deaths of hundreds of citizens and costing hundreds of billions of taxpayer money while they built a new voter base. The plan was to get some legislation passed to allow illegal aliens to vote. They may have succeeded but the Republicans regained control of the House in 2018 and the democrats were not able to get it done.
I wonder if people know just how close we came to losing the whole country to this insanity.
