Which is better: 1911 or Glock 17?

That depends on what you want to do with it. 1911 single stack magazine if you want to be able to shoot well one handed, or want a safety and carry one in the chamber. Glock was designed to be shot with two hands, and has no safety. Glock was designed to be a military side arm carried in a holster on the outside of your belt. It was not designed to be a concealed carry gun with a bullet in the chamber unless you want to blow your own balls off or shoot yourself in the leg. 1911 has a grip safety and a thumb switch safety. There are high capacity double stack magazine 1911 pistols, but some of them have jamming and feeding problems. If you want high capacity, get the Glock. 1911 will generally be heavier, but there are aluminum frame models that are a little lighter for carrying. Don't get the aluminum frame 1911 if you are going to shoot a shitload of rounds through it, though. It will wear out. You can get a 1911 with all stainless steel parts if you are around a lot of salt water. 1911 also runs better after being dropped in sand or mud. They feel totally different from each other when shooting them, not just because one is a 45 acp and one is a 9mm. You can also get a 1911 in 9mm or a Glock in 45 acp. The best thing to do is go to the range and rent the guns you are thinking about buying and see which one you can shoot better or like feel of more. If want a gun to keep in your nightstand or for concealed carry, a snub nose double action revolver is hard to beat. There's no slide, safety, or magazine to fiddle with and no hair trigger to worry about when you're rushing and scrambling in an emergency situation. You just always keep it loaded and pull back the trigger until it goes bang. It is a lot harder to shoot accurately, but most shootings happen within 30 feet.

A 1911 is a big bulky weapon that fires a big heavy slow bullet. 45ACP is readily available in subsonic and +P variants.

Glock 17 is not as big or heavy and has more magazine capacity but smaller lighter ammunition also readily available and varied.

Both are easy to handle given you have relative normal hand size. Both are reliable.

Putting aside the advancements in technology and materials since the 1911 was first designed, the 9mm cartridge is just really really ideal for handguns. The 45acp is not bad but it is arguably too powerful for a handgun which means you are making unnecessary sacrifices in weight, magazine size, recoil and such.
