I live near a major facility with large numbers of people with security clearances, including two people in my family. Security is taken very seriously. But there is a saying: "Secure as hell and leaks like a sieve".

When you have a few million people with security clearances, stuff is going to get out. This has been a problem for ages, and certainly isn't unique to the present administration. Sometimes administrations try to crack down. They close one hole while a dozen more still exist.

My father had a top secret clearance in the 70s. Like every other president, Carter tried to crack down on leaks. He didn't do anything fancy or techy. He just said there were too many top secret clearance and the number needed to be reduced. So my father, along with a lot of other people, had their clearance reduced to a lower level.

It still leaked like a sieve though.

You will never ever stop this stuff. All you can do is keep plugging holes - while foreign intelligence keeps looking for new ones.

Yes, it looks like a screw up. not sure on whom or where. They need to figure it out and learn humility. At least Gabbard has that, some others not.

I can only guess based upon how I've seen systems work... the email list in the system was kept around from prior group. Someone typed in a name and it auto filled in this wrong person. Or maybe they grabbed the wrong group? It's a big chat list... nobody checked or verified the audience.

Definitely requires a review and correction of systems, policies and procedures. It is a sign to the guy at the top to think harder about flushing people out and handoff of administrations.

This is a sign, not to be ignored in terms of personnel.

They are being more transparent about govt operation, but this was a dumb mistake and shows lack of detail. Thats not good. You gotta wonder about other risks.

Based on the parts I've seen, it may not have been "classified," but it should've been, and regardless, it's not a conversation that should've ever been taking place over a messaging app. Even if that was apparently a policy approved during the Biden era, everyone in that chat group with a military background should've known better and had that policy reversed. There's way too many points of failure on this story to go into detail but my bottom line opinion is that there is no reason why Mike Walz shouldn't either resign or be fired. Whether or not a staffer is the one who included not just a reporter - but probably the single worst reporter in the country - is a separate conversation as far as I'm concerned and highlights another major problem as to why people's staff have access to this sort of thing too.
