It's not easy. Corporate media can sound very credible. It employs the most professional liars. They can sound convincing, especially when all the outlets (ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, NPR, WaPo, NYT, etc. etc.) have similar opinions. They manufacture the illusion of consensus. They tell us what they want us to think rather than presenting balanced information and perspective. It's designed that way.
Google is part of it. When you Google, you get the impression that there is a consensus. Alternative points of view are blocked, mocked or slandered.

What you have to do is take everything with a grain of salt, then do more research to learn what the "official" news sources weren't telling you.

What was the Ammon Bundy standoff and the thing at Malheur actually about? 911? Covid? The climate change narrative? Ukraine? Israel?

Look for sources that have nothing to gain from lying and everything to lose by telling the truth. Look for people who look for holes in the "official" narrative and reveal credible sources that corporate media ignores. Seek documentation - who, what, when, where, why. Actual eye witnesses.

Books are very enlightening.

Be very suspicious of opinion and ideological bias.

Develop opinions based on what you have heard or read so far. Then modify or change your opinions as more information becomes available. Use common sense.

Not easily. You have to look at the context. Sometimes it looks like Libs Of Tiktok, absurd, and sometimes it seems more real. The ones that begin with weasel words are easy to dismiss. And example:

*United States Homeland Security Advisor, Stephen Miller said: Factual.
*Without evidence, Far Right Trump appointee Steven Miller said: Two weasel phrases.

"Fake; is often attached to actual factual situations, but weasel words color the intent of he statement. Someone should compile a list of Democrat Weasel Words and phrases.

Here's some fake news I saw here recently. The Trump Administration is considering annexing Guyana and Suriname. If it is presented properly, people will believe it is possible. That was when annexing Greenland was in the news cycle.;

Sadly, over 90% of journalists in the US vote Democrat. In a recent poll, 76.1% of them claim to be more far-left than Obama. One reason for this is that most of the colleges are controlled by the democrat party. Literally every faculity member is radical leftist. If you attend these colleges and are trying to get a degree in journalism, you'll soon find that the curriculum is very progressive. If you are not hardcore "woke", you will not be passing those classes. It is designed to make it very difficult for students who have a different political perspective. As to your question on how you can tell, do some research. Don't take anything as absolute truth without checking the source. DO NOT use the so-called "fact-checking" organizations. All of the main ones are also controlled by the democrat party. Politifact, Politico, etc, get their funding from democrat donors. Everyone who works for them are democrats. MSNBC definitely has the crown for fake news, with CNN in 2nd place. CBS, NBC, ABC, and even government funded PBS are just mouthpieces for the DNC. It was recently revealed that almost everyone at PBS is a democrat. They should lose all funding from the government. You are better off getting news from podcasts that mainstream media.

not saying that the right doesn’t spread propaganda, because it does.

but majority of leftists are the ones under the most propaganda and most of them cannot sport it because they fall for words “according to our research”

then they repeat the lies over and over in their news. So much to the point where they are repeating it even when the news stops.

the worst part is that when most of their “fact checks” and “according to their experts” are exposed as lies, the propaganda that fed them the lies doesn’t bother to inform their audience that it was all lies, they leave them in the dark, and online they don’t remove the fake fact checks, they leave them up to keep their consumers stupid in ignorance.

then they argue their case because they’re so sure of it and then composting their fact checks links proudly to assure their opponents that what they say has a back up of truth … brainless ignorance 🤯

I can, for the most part. So much of the fake news boils down to a dishonest framing of the facts.

A good 75-80% of fake news can be filtered out by looking at the "who, what, where, when why" of the story and realizing that the story either doesn't tell you anything useful, or simply doesn't make sense. It's amazing how much reporting relies on quasi anonymous sources that "claim to be familiar with" things.

Another ~15% can be caught by investigating stories from multiple news sources. And again, it never hurts to do the "who, what, where, when, why" on those stories as well.

Then there are those last few stories that are either really well told lies, government false flag propaganda operations, or some public figure being tarred and feathered (all of which happen far more than anyone wants to acknowledge!).

I haven't watched or read any 'news since years I missed nothing relevant.

The ''news'' that may count to me is/are about individual persons' experiences or thoughts. For this I use ''GaG'' - strange as it sounds.

But... the peoples' voice is clearer than that of some self interested manipulation enterprises.

Since quite a number of years already, I see the ''news providers'' as being entertainment organizations that had lost their neutrality.

Given, that once I had considered to university study journalism, I am now extremely happy that I haven't gone down that path.

Fake news: Free "journalism" aggregated from wire services & reputable journalism and put through {insert any right wing filter here} to be packaged & sold with ads & your data

Real news: Subscription based paid journalism.

Capitalism by definition rewards quality products with higher value / prices. If it's free, it's not journalism - it's shit quality by definition cuz it's free.

Yeah, I can check multiple sources and give information a sanity test. Sadly only about 50 percent of the adult population in the USA is capable of those things.

If it's coming from a source with strong political leanings and they're making a big deal of it but it not being widely reported then I'm suspicious.

I haven't got time to fact check so its up to the source to prove their credibility to me, I'm certainly not going to believe some amateur journalists at face value.

No. Real things happen without any connection to logic or common sense, therefore it's difficult to differ a fake news from real one just on hand of context of the news. As example current US govt. It's real satire and few years back no one would believe an elected president can be that limited.
What is easily doable is to cross check a suspicious news with other sources in search engines.

Always be wary of anything that looks like it's proving something you already knew or suspected. Always ask the opposite. For example. Don't ask do vaccines cause autism? Ask do people lie about vaccines causing autism? Don't look up Donald Trump lies? Look up what things has he said that even Democrats say are true. Search out the opposite of what you believe. And get out of the echo chamber that soon much media has built so you feel right.

I think, for far too many people these days, facts are determined by how much they like the person delivering those fact.
Fox News agreed to pay hundreds of millions of dollars for broadcasting lies, and yet, many still go to them for their “facts.”
It is definitely getting harder to tell what is truth and what is false.

not always, with AI the lines are blurred and there are some very talented instigators out there preying on the weak minded, ill informed, or those that simply believe what is written without question. Seeking to push their own agendas or those of a specific party, nation, or group. We definitely need to do our diligence to keep things honest.
