I find the distinction mostly meaningless in the terms most people apply it to. If we are concerned about propaganda, or having people manipulate you through information, then it does not actually matter if the information is "real" or "fake". There is a whole category of propaganda that is specifically about manipulating people with truthful information.

Furthermore, aside from how useless the distinction between real vs fake news is the argument about "fake news" itself has become so weaponized by propagandists over the years that the usage of that term is almost certainly connected by an attempt to control you through propaganda.

Real news is what confirms your bias, fake news is what conflicts with it. News is almost never just the facts, heck in most cases we don't even really know what the facts are. Even if we do know all the facts it's useless to us if those facts aren't placed into a narrative. So in short all news is fake news.

"So in short all news is fake news."

This conclusion looks like a very slippery slope lol, as it can be used to dismiss any legitimacy in information

@Maybe_Maybe_not People do that all the time to information that doesn't fit their bias, plus how do you know if a source is "legitimate" I'm not saying that all information needs to be dismissed, but people need to be a bit more skeptical and open minded. Focus more on things that you can control and confirm and less on things thousands of miles away.

I stopped actively watching the news a long time ago. They just sensationalize and catastrophize everything to keep you hooked and scared and I’m tired of feeling that way over stuff I have no control over anyhow.

Yes but it takes time and effort. One thing about propaganda is the approach is usually to flood the conversation with so many lies repeated so often that no one can ever disprove them all. It is much easier to manufacture lies than it is to disprove a lie. it keeps the opposition on the defensive constantly. People playing defense can't play offense. Propaganda recognizes and exploits this weakness in an open society.

If I'm enough familiar with the subject.

Also the track record is a good indicator on how reliable some newspaper is.

You are probably better off with some old local one requiring a subscription than a free click bait mass media.

Unless if its one spreading fake news.

there's really no such thing as real news. Almost every single one of them lie through their teeth ten times a sentence regardless of side. All you can do is hear all sides and then figure out who's lying about what based on indiscreetness.

More like opinion pieces versus dry ass news. You can tell it's bullshit when it's just opinion after opinion thrown your way. No facts. That's the fake news networks.

It's easy, if it's a left wing commie talking it's fake. If it's conservative inc like Ben Shapiro it's probably fake too. If it's Mark Dice or Tim Pool, it's real.
