I have traded stuff with individuals. I bet if I wanted to I could go to the pawn shop and trade with the shop owner too. But that's not going to work with corporate stores since they don't have things setup to do that.

And you do know that back in the old days there were vastly different cultures trading with each other. In one culture something was worth a lot that was worth zero in the other culture. We don't have that situation now. Everybody is going to have a more common/shared idea of the values. Nobody is going to give you 1,000 acres of land for a box of crayons.

Because it's easier to pay with commodity money, then commodity money was replaced by fiat money because it's in the government's interest to generate inflation to devalue fiat money and drive rampant consumerism so people spend their money, thus increasing the gross domestic product.

The barter system has too many variables compared to the gold standard. Gold is the universal thing we all agree is valuable, but your mom’s handmade clay vase that you want to trade isn’t necessarily as valuable to the man you’re trying to buy a cow from.
