According to experts the papabile (candidates with the highest chance to become the pope) are:
- Matteo Zuppi, Italian, age 69, archbishop of Bologna, considered progressive. He opposes right-wing populism, nationalism and anti-immigrant beliefs, he emphasizes Europe's moral duty to welcome migrants. He supports pan-Europeism and making celibacy optional (saying that Greek Catholics are already not required to follow this). He was also a leading voice of support for the 2018 Vatican-China Agreement, which allows the pope to approve and veto bishops approved by the Chinese Communist Party.
- Luis Antonio Tagle, from Phillipines, age 67, archbishop of Manilla, considered moderately progressive and close associate of Francis. He opposes abortion, contraception and what he has called "practical atheism" but also criticized the Catholic Church for using "harsh words" to describe LGBT people (while opposing gay marriage) as well as prostitutes, homeless people, divorced and remarried Catholics. He believes wheather divorced Catholics should be allowed to receive Holy Communion should be decided on a case-by-case basis. He also advocated for better treatment of migrants, and also supports 2018 Vatican-China agreement.
- Pietro Parolin, age 70, Italian. Considered a centrist or moderately progressive. He opposes abortion, euthanasia and gay marriage (while being pretty not-commited on blessing gay couples by Fiducia supplicans) but is open to making celibacy optional. He supports two-state solution in Gaza.
- Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Italian, age 60, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, considered moderately conservative.
- Péter Erdő, from Hungary, age 72, archbishop of Budapest and primate of Hungary, considered conservative. He opposes the idea of allowing divorced and remarried Catholics to receive Holy Communion.

From what I heard, the most probable outcome is one of the more centrist candidates, like Parolin or Pizzaballa.

Frankly, any pope that classifies himself as a progressive is not suitable for the job. It breeds ambiguity and allows for the proliferation of evil.

Thats why I think they may have objections with choosing him. Although Francis was old, so now they might also go for a young pope.

I am not Catholic, so I don't have a dog in that fight, but. . . it would be nice to see churches staying out of politics.

I don't know but I hope it's gonna be either a French one or a conservative one. I loved Pope Francois but I would prefer a more conservative one.

Candidates that are very left wing or very right wing rarely become popes. The only ones in recent history are Benedict XVI and Francis. The rest were centrist, compromise candidates.

I don't know how "right wing" Erdo is. Sure, he's been described as "boringly conservative", but he's relatively non-controversial and is apparently well liked and respected by many in the Vatican. He hasn't been in the news much until recently and he could prove to be a stabilizing and unifying figure if he were to get the job.
