Who would volunteer to be an interplanetary coloniser?

Would you choose to be a member of the crew of a human colonisation mission to another planet knowing all the things you have here would be left behind and the risk and work you'd have ahead of you would be for the rest of your life?

Not me. Not until we invent an Alcubierre drive to warp spacetime. Sublight travel comes with extreme travel times for extreme distances as well as time dilation. It's essentially suicide the moment you start the trip. What are the chances machinery will survive a 30 year voyage without failure? What if your destination is uninhabitable? If you leave Earth at age 30, objective time will put you at 60 when you arrive. You gonna colonize a planet at 60? How'd your body hold up over 30 years in low or zero gravity? Android bodies? What about your mind that's trapped in a confined space with limited social interaction for 30 years? Do you arrive insane? Do you just stop caring about survival at some point? One crew member could do a lot of damage.

Mars is the only planet possible to reach in our lifetime and survive for more than a few hours outside a spaceship. Mars is colder than Antarctica, drier than the Sahara Desert, has low gravity, and has less than 1% of Earth's atmosphere, with only traces of oxygen. That is certain death as a colonizer within a few years, regardless of how many supplies and equipment we bring with us.

I don't see any sane person volunteering except to get their name in history books and be famous.

I think the idea would be to put accommodation built by robots and using EV suits to allow movement on the surface but you're right about the most likely first place to colonise. The lack of water is an issue but it can be produced there with the make up of the soil and using electrolysis on it to get the oxygen and hydrogen out.

I wouldn't want to be on the first ship lol but maybe once a colony has been established I would consider it :)

That's unfortunate. The claustrophobia would be something to take into account with such long spells in cramped conditions. I reckon that there would have also been some consideration about what to feed on too. No one who "must have" meat would be able to go. A plant based diet would have to be the primary food source
