If someone chokes on ice, they deserve to die because what kind of piggot gulps down ice.

Jk, who am I to complain, I choked on water.

Let's assume that the ice doesn't come out from this person's throat.

Well, my guess will be that they might either die due to panicked reaction, wasting the energy derived from residual oxygen in body by try to cough out really aggressively. The usual case.

Or in an exceptional case, even if they are exceptionally patient, and wait for the ice to melt (won't take much time cuz core body temperature is hot, must be done by 3 times minimum, which is again exceptional), there are high chances that the water that melted off the ice will start gathering in lungs. So they may not die immediately, but sometimes later when they're lying down, the water from lungs will resurface and they'll choke on water.

Or if you're lucky, you'll end up with pneumonia.

The thing is, it's difficult for your mind to process anything when you're in a panicked situation and no matter what you're choking on, it's difficult to just cough it out. And if anything then liquids are more risky because they might get into your lungs more easily as compared to solids. But I will agree that choking on solids is more dangerous because it's either choke out of die. With water it is die, get pneumonia or stay alive.
