Until it doesn't. If a religion says everyone who doesn't follow what it says deserves to die and when you die for your religion you get rewarded then logically once that religion gets their hands on a nuclear weapon they would use it without caring about the outcome.
I think that nuclear weapons serve as a significant deterrent not only to a world war but also to limited local wars. The US has a penchant for invading countries when it disagrees with their politics or wants their resources, yet it has *never* invaded a country that has nuclear weapons. Based on this, many countries like China and Iran develop nuclear weapons as essentially "insurance" against an invasion by the US.
According to some geopolitics specialists last 80 were a phenomenon in human history in matter of unwillingness to escalation. It seems nukes work as deterrent at some level
To a point, but eventually some idiot will think it's worth taking the hit.

Yes. Right up to the point that someone is handed the nuclear keys that doesn't fully think things through. And or has nothing to lose.
For example, calling for regime change in Iran is potentially dangerous. Someone who has everything to lose potentially has NOTHING to lose by a nuclear strike.
Nope. You can have a crazy leader with nukes that's old and near the end of his life and doesn't give af about mutually assured destruction.
Yes, but it doesn't work on a country that thinks that death will result in getting 52 virgins
there would be no winners in an all-out nuclear war
Yes, that's the main purpose, since the days of cold war.
Yes, as long as there are no crazy lunatics in charge of their buttons.
During the Cold War, it did, but no longer
so far, yes...
Depends on the person with the button
Not really. Israel is a perfect example.
They didn't, and that's my point.
They did with the USSR.
Not with some of today's bad actors.
It has in the past.
