Why do many people assume that immigration is a right than a privilege?

Right now, there is so much uproar about Trump detaining and deporting illegal immigrants and legal immigrants who overstayed their welcome by doing things such as engaging in disruptive protests on college campuses. Why is this? Isn’t immigration a privilege rather than a right? Can’t the USA kick out intruders or those who overstay their welcome just like private property owners can?

Oh, boy. This topic is far more complicated than you think it is. First of all, yes there are instances where its literally your human right to immigrate as outlined in the universal declaration of human rights which USA wrote and is a signatory off. It does however leave nations open to decide for themselves how they deal with most other kinds of immigration aside from Asylum.

More specifically to USA however is the culture of America. In other words, USA is "the land of the immigrants", and I am not just talking about legal immigration here. For most of Americas history it has had a sort of "open door" policy which has propelled it to the superpower it is today. As such, accepting immigration including the illegal kind is pretty much part of American culture and could be considered as an "American right".

Furthermore, even the idea of "closing the borders" and not accept migration is a very new concept which simply did not use to exist. Its something that only even became possible with modern nation-states where we have become able to track populations through bureaucracy and man our borders with sufficient government power to even put up a meaningful border to allow for such checks.

So yeah. This is a complicated topic.

Of course it is a privilege! I mean, I object to people being deported over things like protesting just because like, freedom of speech etc. We should be extending our core values to protect everyone in the country, not just citizens. (But also, protest is supposed to be disruptive. That's literally the point.)

I also believe that people's place in and connection to their community is important and valuable. If people aren't committing like violent crime, then really I don't care whether they're here legally or illegally. And even if they are committing serious crimes, I object to sending anyone to institutions committing human rights violations. There has to be a baseline treatment and we need to uphold our justice system. Pulling people off the streets, even from their own immigration hearings, and detaining or deporting them without any sort of warrant or trial seems really un-American to me.

If this was what he was doing, and trump followed the law. There wouldn't be an "uproar."

Facts matter.

He is abducting people of color off both public and private property without legal judge signed court warrants.. and zero due process and zero contact info. Additionally being held in monstrous conditions.

They don't even need to overstay their visa, participating in a socialist/communist protest is enough. If you apply for a visa and you are associated with socialist/communist party in anyway you can have your visa revoked and be deported since you lied on your application and anti-communism laws require it to protect American from communist subversion.

The protests that are ongoing are all left-wing protests which are often funded by socialist/communist party organizations or directly by China. So it's an easy deport for just about anyone that's out there protesting.

Well when you are deporting people who have been here for years who are actively working and contributing to society and separating them from their families for no other reason than “b.. but they’re illegal”, people aren’t going to like that. Also no one should be getting removed from the country for freedom of speech.
