Was in discussion about this on another forum, a person mentioned how they grew up in an extremely poor white community and took offense to it. It was more that he realized the Workers Of The World didn't unite in WW1 and went off to the trenches for King & Country quite happily. So he concluded Workers Of The World etc was a dud and needed the sounder footing of nationalism for socialism to take off.

It is important to realize there were a lot of different versions of socialism and the First International was held to reach some common consensus between 1864 and 1876 but never could because they all disagreed on what socialism was so violently. In fact it can't be agreed on as to when it ended - in some sources it went till 1886.

Mussolini just created yet another form of socialism in 1915 and there wasn't anything to chuck him out of because there was no single concept. Lots of socialist movements supported going to war to support their national governments.

The second International failed on the issue of socialists supporting their national gov't's war goals. So Mussolini wasn't on his pat malone and arguably just formalized the divide. The workers state was always central to socialism... so that wasn't particularly new
