@nightdrot You're crazy. Mao was and is beloved. He put China on the map again. Totalitarianism was the ONLY way to breakup the feudal monopoly and trigger massive growth.

Really? Please provide some data - polling or some such - that shows contemporary Chinese attitudes to Mao. Certainly even in 1949 it was, at best, a mixed review. (See also Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau.)

In any case, Hitler was popular at one point with the Germans. Mussolini with the Italians. The question in those cases - and in Mao's case - was not were they popular? Rather, it was - and is - "Ought they be popular?"
