What do you believe the motivation is behind corruption?

Why do people engage in corrupt practices? It can get them in a lot of trouble and often cost them large portions of their lives in prison, yet they do it anyway. It is particularly corrupt in the United States and other countries where capitalism is the economic system. Do you think this choice of an economic system has anything to do with the prevalence of corruption?

It’s not more prevalent under capitalism. Every single time some nitwit points to the failures of “socialism” and “communism”, they’re pointing to corrupt systems.
The same thing corrupts nearly every system of government and economics, greed. The insatiable demand for more than you have. Moreover, the insatiable demand for more than you deserve.
Capitalism is a system built by the greedy for the greedy. Which is how it hid the corruption so well for so long. As long as someone somewhere was getting rich, it’s “success”. Under any other circumstances the things people do to each other for financial gain are widely recognized as defects of character. Capitalism is inherently corrupt because it is based entirely upon what we can take from others. The proof that it is by the rich and for the rich is all around us every day. Poor people who demand more than they have or more than they deserve are marginalized. Rich people who do it are characterized as “ambitious” and “savvy”. Anyone who hasn’t questioned that has chosen ignorance.

Not for nothing, but there are hundreds of functioning communes all over the world, including in the United States. Communism is not inherently corrupt. Neither is socialism. These are systems designed around what we can share. They are easily corrupted on large scales when everyone doesn’t know everyone else. A selfish person can hide their intentions in order to gain wealth and power. In smaller, tighter societies, the people with those defects of character are always marginalized. This is why so many people suggest that communism and socialism punish ambition and success. They absolutely do not. They punish greed.
Even the bible characterized greed as one of the seven deadliest sins. We have known it was a problem since the dawn of civilization. Yet we embraced systems of economics and government built entirely on greed.

“Absolute power corrupts absolutely”

When you have a system of checks and balances that work to balance govt powers also defines ways to check the power to keep branches from gaining too much power, in theory it keeps everyone in line.

Lobbyists , Partisan Justice Picks , and Money Hungry Politicians In Power corrodes the ‘flawless system’.

When it works, it is flawless though when too much power finds its way or the branches refuse to use the checks or are incapable then you will see corruption.

It doesn’t even need to be at the top of the Govt Powers, it can happen underneath like Boss Tweed who took advantage of where the railroad tracks would be laid meaning he could pop up businesses strategically to make loads of money along with using his money / influence to get his greedy corrupt bodies into government offices to continue.

O remember after a major tragedy where I live that affected hundreds and killed many there was money raised by charities, goverment money for the local community and government compensation set aside for victims and their families. Those that worked in local charities got new suits, laptops the works, money was given to local poloticiams to spend to ease the byrdens and of course their offices got renovated. A local team booked a major soccer team to play the local team to raise money for local charity, to book thd team came out of the money raised for charity and the local team kept the majority of the money which disappeared down a black hole. Then the government compensation money was spent on years of litigation and legal battles with the majority of that money going to law firms. The BBC made a documentary about it that got mysteriously shelved and thd matter dropped.

Capitalism glorifies wealth to an unhealthy degree. The US is completely corrupt. But you have corruption in any system. Russia is a fascist dictatorship and rife with corruption. Same with Colombia, Venezuela, and Mexico. Anywhere you have poverty and injustice you will have crime. What other options do people have?

Corruption is a human trait. humans are by nature greedy. Do not think that there is no corruption in communist countries. They are cesspools too.
