I can’t speak for the country as I don’t know, but we have a prison about 15 minutes drive outside of my town, it’s nice inside. Inmates get their own room, TV and internet access, healthy meals, good hygiene practices, good medical care - there’s a mental health team that visit the prison every week and on site psychologist & psychiatrist, there’s also onsite doctor & nurses, and inmates are transported to our towns hospital under supervision for serious health problems. I have family who are prison officers so thats the only reason why I know.

Depends on the state, area, and if its a jail, prison or penitentiary. Generally they are dirty, cramped, unsafe with no air conditioning and rats and roaches. They suck. Any time I was in county, I had no privacy and the CO's are assholes. Plus the food is literally labeled as being unfit for human consumption.

I spent four days in Cook County Jail about twenty years ago. It was alright, but man, oh man... those baloney sandwiches give you the worst gas... when we were waiting to be processed out, I had it pretty bad, but everyone blamed it on this older guy. You know what they say: the one that smelt it, dealt it... lol.

Decent enough I would guess, the major bad thing is early release schemes it's proven lesser sentences of early releases lead to more reoffending. Which is due to overcrowding so that's for sure an issue, why they ya know don't just build more prisons is beyond me.
I can tell ya I hope they get better blankets than what you get at police cell but don't think they do so that sucks too.

We have problems of overpopulation and mental health crises, with rising suicides. Steps have been taken to improve conditions, but it's still too little.

If you ignore the drug problem and the bad neighbours then they're a lot nicer than many peoples homes.

India; hygiene and living conditions suck. Internet access, I'd be surprised if they had it in jail unless it was for serious mafia.

It depends county to county and prison to prison. I know prisons where inmates get free tablets and prisons with slave labor camps. It's a tossup here

Not great in the US, we have tougher prisons than Europe, but we also have tougher criminals. People say we should focus more on rehabilitation, I say the goal should be to deter people from becoming criminals in the first place.
