Are prisons nice places in your country?

The photo is of Parc Prison in Wales and is lifted from a local online newspaper article. Being a good person I've never been in prison but I suspect most of you lot have, either as an inmate or visiting family. So is this what a typical prison looks like where you live?

Even the Drug Lords do not want to go to a US prison. These prisons are violent, overcrowded and often keep people in their cells for 23 hours a day for years which was a courtroom fight just get them an hour of outside in a cage time and a little bit of a small window for sunshine in some of them. See picture below

Prison gangs are different than street gangs. The gangs are based on race and you must hang with your race. Whites are outnumbered generally but gangs like the Aryan Brotherhood are feared and not so easy to get into. Some prison will allow US military veterans to have a separate wing which is often a better choice.

Surprisingly, the gang that you are in is the most likely gang to hurt or kill you. Otherwise it will start a gang war. Other gangs may insist that your own gang punish you for breaking prisoners rules/code and they will in order to keep the peace. And child molesters or people that hurt children are a number 1 target in prison and they can join no gang for protection. Each race is expected to take care of them so if white, white gangs will punish them. Rapists get no love either as anything sexually deviant is punished. Each prison though is very different.

Nor would I want to be in Australia , violent , dangerous places , no matter how clean the exteria.

Didn't seve well for Carl Williams , when as a guest of her majesty' ( queen alive then ) he was murdered inside , yet none saw anything.
I have made a visit to a friend inside previously , even as a guest it's frightening place , lots of mental illness in there too.

I believe leading nations like the USA, UK, Japan, France & Germany put importance to human rights even to those of criminals.

I can at least say that American prisons aren't disgusting or inhumane.

In fact, some homeless people would rather be put in the slammer for free food and clean shelters.

This is more like it. My uncle just had a roomie, so the room was bigger, it was around 1999 so no laptop either. 🥲 They baked me a cake (they had a kitchen right outside their room) and we played Chinese chess.

I’ve been to Don Jail in Toronto as part of a tour group once it closed. It was nice I guess. Since it was closed I didn’t see any inmates but the concept was to been a progressive prison. Most repeated offenders went there and apparently the living conditions weren’t so bad either.

Absolutely not. From what I've heard the facilities are disgusting. I do know they don't serve the inmates food, so family or friends have to come by everyday to leave food for them. You're lucky if you're sick because the medical ward or whatever is the only "nice" place. And it's so overcrowded that they often release people that should have stayed there longer.

I had a friend who ended up in Dartmoor at one point - although he was found not guilty on appeal thanks to the prosecution withholding evidence and pissing the judge off. Apparently his wing was ok - but maximum security there still had the bucket system...

Prisons in the UK and large parts of Europe are like holiday camps, one guy who was in social care and ended up in HMP Belmarsh, the UKs toughest prison dropped his request to be moved to a mental health setting because he was better off in the prison then in any healthcare setting. That tells you all you need to know. Some prisoners even get keys to their own cells.

This looks like one of those 19th century model prisons where a single warder could keep tabs on all the prisoners.

It is far too cosy and nice in my view and should be far more uncomfortable. There appears to be a food court at the bottom. The inmates should just get dried crusts and water to eat as they walk around. The tables should not have seats!

I went to the opening ceremony of a county jail that was constructed in the median strip of a highway. This place had a gym and weigh room and rec room with pool tables and TV sets. The rooms were nicer than the dorm room I had in college.

Prisons should be about rehabilitation. Prisoners are stuck there 24/7, so they should be given the opportunity to rehabilitate themselves, so they won't go back to a life a crime. Treating them like animals is not conducive to that

In the US, it seems to depend upon how much money you have as to rather you serve time in a resort country club. Or in a honest to goodness prison.
I have visited one. But never spent the night!

I would never call any prison "nice". Some are better than others, while some are true hell holes.

Never been to prison. Why do you assume most people have been to prison in some form or the other. I would assume its pretty rare to be inside a prison even as visitor.

And no, prisons in germany are not nice. Its prison.

I have never been to a real working prison but I have been to a couple of Prison museums. Yes in the United States we have “Prison Museums”. They don’t seem to be nice places.
