Should politics matter in a committed relationship?

My girlfriend and I are very similar when it comes to core philosophies about the world and how we believe we should be as humans. We both have a thirst for adventure and travel. We’re both in the same career field and passionate about it. We’re both very intellectual and love to discuss philosophy, sciences, and engineering topics. Where we differ is in how much our politics shape our world view. I’m relatively apolitical and hold a belief that its a rigged system, but my girlfriend is extremely anti trump and sees racism everywhere in the world. I don’t accept the premise that the United States is systemically racist, or that people are inherently racist, and I voted for trump. Can this work?

Politics definitely matters. Your girlfriend is fighting for human rights and as far as she can tell, you’ve given up. I can tell you quite confidently that she doesn’t see you as husband material if you can’t agree that the system deserves to be fixed rather than just let it be broken and content because it doesn’t affect you specifically.
