It’s tough to say. We’ve never really been “free”. So it’s purely a philosophical question. Freedom is the absence of rules. Society is the presence of rules. There is no real freedom in a society of any kind. We have choices, but choosing poorly has negative consequences. It’s those choices that create the illusion of freedom. If you look at what typically constitutes a poor choice, it’s usually characterized by selfishness. The more you do for yourself and the less you do for others, the more likely you are to be marginalized the hard way. In the society we’ve created, great wealth and power are as close to freedom that you could hope to get. Isn’t it ironic?
Realizing we make our own moments of happiness inside the darkness. In societies we have this push to keep finding the better life and once you find it you'll just be happy. But life happens. People die. Natural disasters strike and you can lose everything. There is no perfect goal to reach. It's about balancing what you have in the moment and appreciating it. Then you are always free.

Free range chicken?
