Sigh. Being falsely accused of a crime is a violation of law and, more important, of civil liberties. And that isn’t what he was talking about- in citing the Dred Scott decision from 168 years ago, he’s claiming that blacks have never had constitutional rights.

We know that there are far too many people bringing falsely accused of crimes, but judges most definitely do not always side with cops. Prosecutors have to work with them, but even you have to admit that some of them want to prosecute cops for ideological reasons.

Without qualified immunity, cops would not be able to do their jobs. Qualified immunity doesn’t keep a cop from being prosecuted. Being a dirty cop obviously should result in being fired and prosecuted.

As for blacks being more likely to be falsely accused of crimes, that of course shouldn’t happen, but isn’t surprising because they commit more crimes. My question is, are blacks being falsely accused of crimes disproportionate to the rates at which they commit them? And this says nothing about Joe many crimes are never prosecuted for one reason or another.

The issue isn’t simple enough to be addressed by a few posts on a thread, but we as a society do need to be aware of it and do something about it.

Saying qualified immunity has to be eliminated is extreme. I'd suggest better training and higher standards for police officers are better solutions. But no doubt you consider any suggestions other than ones approved by you to be "scum".

Unarmed people get killed all the time by police. Why is it necessary to kill a suspect that is in no way a threat to the officer? That’s what is going on. It's very easy to make vague statements like yours and demand everyone agree with you. Each case has its own circumstances. Are some of them unjustified shootings? I think most people would agree with that. But certainly not all of them, and often the cop isn't merely "trigger-happy" or "dirty". And don't forget these decisions have to be made in real time.

You think you know everything and have all the answers. That is dangerously naive. All I'm saying is that there are a lot of gray areas here where there are going to be differences of opinion, so your tunnel vision isn't really useful here. Taking qualified immunity from all cops hurts the good ones.

But of course, it's easier for you to shriek the same old BS than to do the hard stuff and consider each case individually with an open mind.

@Avicenna then why don’t we start training them better. They have to be above 25 years old. Have at least an associates. Any mental disorder, including PTSD, they can’t be a cop. Allowing ptsd cops to work is dangerous.
You say their job is stressful etc… Well they took the job voluntarily. No one forced them. They knew what they were getting into. As for protect? They are keepers of the peace, law enforcers. Their job isn’t protect.

I don’t think I said anything about “protecting”, especially since there are court rulings that they don’t have to. But better academy and ongoing training too.

Of course no mental disorders. But we do need to account for the fact the job is stressful and hard.

I think 25 is a bit too stringent- maybe 22. At least an associate’s is a good idea.

@Avicenna there’s this driver in Florida, video is out there. He got punched for no reason at all. And that cop isn’t charged? If you or me punched a cop, we’d get a felony. But that punch to the driver was out of no where. That’s my issue with police getting special treatment which I’m sick of. Besides it’s not the most dangerous job out there. Ever heard of Roofing? Plus I’ve had stress at my job, but I don’t take swings and act like a bully to others. Many of these officers do. And it was their choice to take that job, so I don’t have any sympathy.

Roofers don’t have to interact with criminals on the job or people lying to them who might be armed.

In the Florida incident you reference, what did the DA who decided not to charge the officer say? Was the driver fully compliant?
