Why is society trying to make people lonely nowadays compared to generations of the past?

There are two main problems.

1. Women and men (at least in western countries) are not morally compatible. The majority of women are very liberal, support promiscuity, lying, theft, abuse, trans agenda, greed, selfishness, and do not work together with their partner to have a successful relationship and have no consideration for others. The majority of men in modern times are more loyal, not as concerned with impressing strangers with material things, want exclusivity in a relationship, and want more fairness. Very incompatible.

2. Many years ago the government encouraged/pushed to get most women to work. Not because the families needed the income, but because more people working meant more tax dollars for the government. They also pushed feminism and the "I don't need a man" agenda to try to separate people so there would be a need to purchase separate housing (more taxes), more vehicles (more taxes), their own individual medical insurance at a higher cost (more taxes), etc. They also promoted promiscuity to keep people from being able to successfully pair bond for long term relationship success.

It isn't an accident, it was by design how things are now.

Its not the fault of society, its capitalism. Lonely people are very profitable both in selling junk onto them but also having them spend more and more time on your services such as youtube or netflix. Its in their profit motive to make you prioritize them over your own social life.
